My brothers had them when we were younger. They are fairly harmless, but they really are not a pet that enjoys being held. My son also had a pet frog a couple of different times, but they lived in a fish aquarium. They were small and if the lid was not on tightly, the frogs would jump out and weeks later we would find them dehydrated somewhere.

Yep, leave it open. If you had a cat, we found that also helps because if the lid is open there is a chance the cat can catch it too.
