almost everyone orders chinese food on new year's eve here. i always assumed it was a nation wide thing until last night when a new to the area friend f/b messaged me and asked why everyone had chinese food in their f/b status. you literally cannot get into a chinese food restaurant here on new year's eve and if you want take-out you need to order it the day before or the morning of. so, is this just a crazy massachusetts/new england tradition??

We do Chinese on Christmas Eve- but more because we don't want to cook that night. We never did Chinese NYE growing up, nor did I know it was overly popular beyond normal among those I knew.
Now that you mention it though, growing up while Chinese was not the in thing in my hometown, seafood was. I remember going with my mom and the little seafood places were packed with people picking up stuff to cook at home.
I voted other but the answer is just no. I have heard of people doing it, I just never knew it was a "thing." My in-laws always do their big dinner christmas eve so they don't have to cook on christmas. My family has always done christmas dinner. This year we did pizza for christmas eve and I have a feeling it will be a tradition whenever my in-laws are out of town. :) It was SO nice!
