Cloth Diapering- educate me :)

We're seriously considering going cloth with this one since we'll (finally) have our own washer and dryer.  The comfort of knowing that even on tight months my baby's bottom is covered is also pushing me in that direction.

I'm tending to lean towards all in ones like Bumgenius, because they seem most disposable diaper-like, and I think that will help me win over Travis.

What do I need to know?
How many do people usually have on hand?

Are the other brands simmiliar to bumgenius that maybe I don't know about, but are the same idea?

For the very early newborn days, we will likely still use disposable.  We'll still be transitioning to the house at that point, and I don't think I want to add the stress of keeping up with wash into the mix at that point.  So cloth will likely be after the first month or so.

I could write about this forever but to start I'll say, I love cloth diapering!

1st: don't buy anything now

2nd: do your research but hold off buying much.

babies are so different and what fits one well doesn't fit another (just like disposables).

even if you can, you likely won't really cloth diaper until they hit 10 lbs. When you are using 10- 12 diapers a day, it's pretty taxing. I'm not saying you can't (I did use cloth with charlie almost from the beginning but he was 10 lbs to start).

Josie I didn't until maybe 2 or 3 months.

I liked all in ones but i also really liked the ones you stuff. What is good with those is that it feels like an all in one but you can take it apart to dry. Then when you take them out of the drier (or the line) you can stuff them right away and they essentially work like a disposable. Grab and go.

With Char I had 12 (which is too few) but with Josie I had a big pile. That was easier.

But that said, I liked some brands more than others (and different brands for each kid).

This isn't probably much help and I need to get back to work but it is really SO much easier than I would have thought.

I agree with Sonya!

I ended up getting most of my diapers off Craigslist, and when I re-sold them, probably made most if not all my money back.  I once bought a huge lot of fitted diapers for dirt cheap, and re-sold a few right away because I had way too many diapers, and then sold the rest little by little as Pea stopped going through so many and then when I changed my diaper preference.  I probably made twice what I paid for that lot!

I've also given a lot away to friends, just so you don't think I've been greedy about dipes, LOL.

Let me see if I can dig up some of the old diaper threads.  I know we talked Jolynn into doing cloth too.  :)  It's so much easier than I expected (and I'm hella lazy), and it's actually fun and addictive.  That said, I've sold off all our stash and Evie isn't potty trained yet.  I couldn't deal with the poop anymore, though it wasn't a big deal to me for a long time.  I'm SO glad I did cloth when she was a baby though.

I used cloth diapers for Christopher from 2 months until he was potty trained.   I loved FuzziBunz brand.  I had 14 diapers but I would recommend having more so you don't have to wash them every single day.  I used disposables at night because cloth diapers would not hold all the pee with Christopher sleeping 12+ hours.

Like Alison, I sold them on ebay after Christopher was potty trained and got about 50-60% back of what I paid so it has a good resale value.

I can't say enough good things about cloth diapers.  They also look so cute on babies :)

Thanks, keep it coming :)

I have my step mother scoping out their craigslist for me.  Our craigslist is for the entire state, and it is rare to find a listing that is reasonable driving distance (and not- sketchy enough to even dare suggest mailing).

Right now i didn't really give her a brand, but rather a little of this or that.  Pocket or all in one.  We for sure won't cloth from the day we take home, I remember the chaos far too much.  We'll wait until things get closer to routine.
