Prescription Hormone Weight Loss?

Does anyone have any experience with prescription hormone weight loss or HCG weight loss programs?

I've been reading about it online....

From what I understand the hormone is not what makes you lose weight - it's a very calorie restricted diet, but the hcg supposedly makes you not hungry because it causes the body to use stored bad fat cells.

Have you tried it?  Know anyone else who tried it?

I KNOW it is not a magic cure-all.  But I'm looking for something to jump start my weight loss.

I would assume that if it does work, maintenance of weight loss would be the problem.  Anyway, would love to hear anything you know about it!

I have heard of it, but I am not big on pills. I rather do low cal diet or stuff like that. i used medifast diet to jump start my weight loss. I will not do it again, but it helped get off the 30lbs i needed.

The program I'm considering is with a doctor's office, and they do injections instead of pills.  One of the big reasons I'm considering this, instead of medifast or something, is that my insurance would cover part of it - since it is done with a doctor and nutritionist.

I have not actually talked to anyone at the office yet.  I thought about calling tomorrow and scheduling a free consultation.

Do you meet the criteria for your insurance to cover it? The dr has to calculate your body fat to approve it. Let me know how it goes.

Honestly, my personal opinion is to steer clear of the HCG "diet." I guess my take on it is that it is not good in the long run. 500 calories a day is not healthy. Of course you are going to lose weight eating so few calories, but at what cost? Everyone I know IRL has gained all the weight back (and typically more) once they go off HCG.

Feel free to ignore, but I just think that if you are really wanted to be "healthy" (vs. losing weight quickly) HCG is NOT the way to go.

I do want to be healthy, but I also want to lose weight quickly.  :)

I started dieting on my own 4 weeks ago.  I joined the YMCA, signed up for their ActiveTrax program - which tells me my workouts for the week and how many calories I can eat.  I've stuck to it and have only lost 7 lbs.  I went off big time this weekend, but the 7 lbs was prior to that.  It's just discouraging.  It's so hard to get to the gym any more than I already am, and I'm so hungry all the time.

I feel like I need some kind of a boost, or I know I'm just going to give up.  7lbs in four weeks is  not cutting it for me. It actually pisses me off. I feel like, what was the point of denying myself yummy foods and being away from my girls to go to the gym for 7 measly pounds.

The things is - 7 pounds in 4 weeks is really good. Especially considering your height and the amount of weight you want to lose. That's almost 2 pounds a week which is actually VERY good. Doing it that way is much healthier and you will keep it off. Seriously - 2 pounds per week is fantastic.

As far as being hungry all the time - look into better options to keep you feeling fuller - up your protein, fiber, etc. There are a lot of things you can change to keep within your guidelines that will help you feel fuller.

I think a lot of people don't realize that 1-2 pounds a week of weight loss is really respectable and actually really good. Even when I was fully on the wagon I was losing 1/2 a pound a week.

Again, feel free to ignore. I am just really anti-HCG.

My MIL, and at least 2 SIL's did this diet and lost weight and then gained all the weight back and more on top of it.  However, it all depends on the lifestyle you choose to live as part of your continued daily diet and it can work.

I think you have the wrong attitude Anything more than 2 pounds a week is an UNhealthy weight loss. I don't know how much you have to lose, but it certainly did not take only a month to gain 20 pounds, it's unrealistic to think you can lose it that quickly. Plus, I guarantee, most of the weight you lose with these fad quick diets will be back on in a years time. eat healthy. Exercise a lot. Don't deny yourself- eat a dessert once or twice a week. Go out for a nice dinner- but 80% of the time make healthy food choices. Eat non processed foods. Eat carbs before 12:00, protein and veg on the evening. Watch your portions. Exercise. Expect to lose 7-10 lbs a week. And gently increase your food consumption once you get to your goal weight - then keep up the exercise. This is a change for life, not a diet. That's the only good way IMO....

I agree Megan, but also have 30+ pounds onyou can be just as bad. I did medifast over a year ago and kept the weight off. It was a 900 calories diet. I have not gained it back. I also sat really healthy and almost hardly any processed food anymore. It helped me get healthy. Taking off that weight and eatin better gave me my life back. Just my take on it. However, not sure if medifast equates the hormon blocker.

i also agree that it  is not good to have 30+ extra pounds.  i just think think that it is much better to lose it on 3-4 months rather than 6 week.  in the scheme of things, time wise its not much longer, yet the odds of keeping it off are much higher losing at a slower rate following a sensible diet and exercise plan.

i think it is fantastic that you kept the weight off.  i think kristi pretty much did too - though if memory serves she has gained some back and gone on and off the diet a few times.  but i remember quite a few other ms gals tried, and most did not succeed.

what i like about what you wrote is that you changed your diet long-term.  you say you hardly eat processed foods anymore, and to me that is KEY.  i am guessing you exercise regularly too?

what alarms me about barbies comment is that she feels denied yummy (fatty?) foods that she wants to eat and she seems reluctant to want to take time to exercise - and to me, that indicates that once the "diet" is over, she most probably woudl gain the weight back. and a less than 1000 calorie diet is NOT meant to be long-term or a yo-yo approach.  barbie, i think you should consider long term views in connection with a "crash" diet, and if you want to do this carefully consider how you are going to maintain after.

i do not approach this with an un-informed view - i do annual 2 week water fasts for the past 12 years, i have researched dozens of hours of impacts to metabolism, weight, nutrition etc.  and my fasts are NOT to lose weight - i gradually gain it all back over the year - my reasons are health and preventative (especially in regards to rheumatiod arthritis which my mother and grandparents suffered from which my fasting has kept at bay for me)

but again, just my personal point of view.

I agree. I guess it does depend on your attitude. I also am gluten and pretty much dairy free. This is for my health though. I discovered through the whole journey that I have an intolerence to both.

I have to admit I am not as good with exercise overall. I do yoga, but I am awful at keeping with a regular schedule of exercise. It is my biggest goal.

I just knew if I did not do something drastic to get my weight off, that my overall health would suffer. I pretty much eat by the glycemic index now. I have a 50% chance of developing diabetes. The weight had to come off for me.

Barbie, 7lbs in 4 weeks is actually great. Also, do not think of your time away from the girls at the gym as a waste. You are improving your overall health and that alone is worth it.

I know crash diets aren't the way to go.  But part of me just feels like if I could get it off quickly, then what I'm currently doing would help me keep it off.

I am working out, although I hate it.  Hate.  I just don't think I will ever be one of those people that grows to love working out.  Maybe when the girls get older, I will enjoy it more.  Right now I go to the Y 3 x per week, and I do the workout that they trainer set up for me.  BUT, the whole time I'm there I'm thinking about all the stuff I need to be doing at home or for work, so it's stressful - not relaxing.  I'm sure I should be going more, but I just can't.  Right now I go on Saturdays and 2 days during the week right after work.

What is it about processed foods that make it harder to lose weight?  Do the preservatives and stuff make it stick some how?  I'm curious about this, because it is one thing that I really haven't changed, but I think it would be fairly easy to do so...

You will see the quickest weight loss through not eating processed. Eat tons of veggies and food in raw form or cook natural food. Most processed foods have tons of unhealthy fillers like startch, corn syrup, etc.

Also. Processed food is loaded in sodium. Will make you retain water.
