holy crap, juni, i forgot how much 30% protein is. i'm WAY under today.

what are your tips for getting in enough protein???

Im not juni, and not following a "diet" but I also have to up my protein because of all the training I am doing., I drink shakes- 1 cup rice or almond milk, 1 big scoop vanilla flavored whey based protein powder, a handful of fruit, my fave is red berries- ESP raspberries and or blueberries. I drink one in the morning- often as a 10am snack. You can also buy another flavor whey powder and just mix it in water and drink it down for a quick anywhere protein fix. I also love lentils and beans-for example Bertrand makes me a big pot of white beans- starts with chopped and sweated carrots celery and onions, add beans and a little chopped tomatoes. Or I love black beans cooked with a little onion and red pepper and lots of fresh cilantro. I eat those on the evening as I don't like to eat meat at night. And lots of thinlly sliced chicken breasts i grill on the stvetop for lunch with green salad and simple vinaigrette or steamed green veggies with lemon and olive oil drizzled on. Usually baby spinach or broccoli, those are the veg highest in protein.

I forgot to say oatmeal- I eat that for breakfast a lot ( like 5x a week in cooler weather). It has a lot of protein too! My trainer has me eating protein pretty much any time I eat. I also snack on a small handful of raw nuts when I am feeling peckish.

what do you put in your oatmeal to sweeten it up?

Yesterday I diced some apples and a bit of cinnamon.  I probably could have gone more cinnamon - it still wasn't sweet enough for me.

in my perfect world I pour milk over it and a teaspoon full of sugar

Do you eat raisins, Kris? If you cook the raisins in the oatmeal, they get all big and juicy and sweet. (you may not be able to have raisins but that's how we make ours)

good idea - not sure if I can have them now but it's good for future reference.

Kate is like her dad - she eats oatmeal plain with a dab of milk.   how?!

I eat zero in my oatmeal. However, I miss it. I cannot eat it anymore because of the gluten. I have to find a gluten free one. I tend to not want to eat a ton first in the morning, so I often use the whey protein and make a fruit shake or something like that.

You see, here is where and why i dont "diet". I have no problem using a splash of milk, a pat of butter, a small spoon of brown sugar... Why not? I think the body needs a bit to these things too, not only lean meat and veg. I dont usually eat processed foods- so why not eat healthy, yet tasty too? Why should i choke down lumpy tasteless oatmeal? I dont deny myself a dinner out with the hubby either. For me, its a lifestyle change. I eat low fat, low sugar, carbs before noontime... But i dont totally deny myself yummy things.

and this is exactly what I intend to do.  I am not going to deny myself anything but overall I'm much more aware of what I'm putting in my mouth.

I'm not a dieter (and never have been) but I want to be an informed eater and I have not been that in the past.

just learning all the preservatives and dyes and colors and chemicals and "stuff" that is in food is irritating to me.  especially for children.  they put the stuff in there to preserve color or make it more appealing and it is not good - like yogurt.  my kids want those yogurts marketed to kids and i just do not feel all the extra stuff that is put in them is necessary or healthy.

Kris, I think you starting out like this is great. It is how I got on the track to really eating healthy. I kind of live like Megan now also, but as of late just started eating yuck. So, I am using this cleanse to get myself back into the game.

I like your philosophy, Megan. I wish Americans would see this and start demanding better for our diets. We should not have to go to Whole Foods to get decent food without perservatives, chemicals, etc. That is what makes me mad.

Kris, i do understand why you cant do this at the moment. When i do my yearly water fast i limit certain foods before and after, and of course only water during the fast. Once you are finished and are motivated with some weight loss, i hope you manage to find that healthier way of eating. Melissa, i understand your sentiment, however any grocery store will sell fresh produce. Stick to the outside perimeter. I think you are referring to organic in your whole foods comment? People should not feel that they "have" to eat organic to be healthy- if one is on a budget, i would emphasise organic meat and dairy first, veg after that... And then stay as far away as possible from boxed and processed foods. but eating totally organic is not necessary. Try to eat fresh. And, imo, that is just a personal choice. And i think people are not demanding because they are lazy and it is not a priority. ( not you, i mean people in general, you are the minority, thus the reason you are having hard time finding it reasonably priced) One thing i hate is items labeled "low fat". 95% of the time that indicates that it is a processed food, to me that means it should be avoided or eaten only in odd occasion. So,if i am going to eat that, and i am eating it as a special treat, then i will go for the real version.

Oh, and this sounds crazy, but i also eat brown rice for breakfast. I try to eat my carbs in the morning, and brown rice is pretty much the healthiest. There is so much you can do with it, but i love sauteeing some raisins, onions and whole fresh almonds and adding that in. Sooo yummy!

Oh, I agree on the produce, Megan. I was more like referencing things like cereal and other foods that are not fresh, but have basic 5 ingredients and not all the fillers of corn syrup, etc. That is why I like trader joe. I wish labeling here in the states had stricter rules.

I buy mostly organic because of the chemicals, but I know you do not have to.

I love brown rice and should start doing that too. I eat a lot o quinoa with veggies.

It's tough. I had to go back and look because I'm so off the wagon right now. Some things that helped me get up there - cottage cheese, any other cheese, tuna fish or other meats, special k (with protein) cereal, peanut butter, beans, eggs. Honestly, I think your best bet is to do a protein shake - it is the easiest way to pack in a good chunk of protein.

I think I'm back on tomorrow. I feel terrible today. Way too much junk combined with AF and just not really caring what kind of food and junk I've been eating. :(

i heard the perimeter quite awhile ago.   And it's funny to think about our married life over the last 15 years and how much I've evolved in feeding our family.

Back in the early years I was making hamburger helper, tuna helper, boxed mac and cheese weekly.  So many processed, "quick" meals.   I'm not even sure when it happened it was so gradual.  I haven't bought a box meal or mac and cheese in years.  I make everything now myself.

Timmy is the only cereal eater. Bertrand and the girls eat hot pasta for breakfast. We always have cooked macaroni in our fridge. He heats it and cooks with egg fried in. And usually some boiled ham. This is because of his diet as a hard core cyclists, and he cooks it for the girls too. And they all have a hot lunch as the main meal of the day. I quickly make something for the kids for dinner, have homemade veggie soup myself and bertrand will eat sonething light in the evening- usually a leftover cold meat ( like baked chicken pieces or leftover of whatever he recently roasted- he will eat it cold with some salad or some baguette. On the weekend, sat and sun, he is the chef and cooks pretty amazing meals for us all. But during the weekdays bert is working late because of the financial crisis, i am taxi to the big kids sports schedule- we dont manage family meals mon-fri.

Looks like you already have most of the hard stuff under control! I grew up on hamburger helper and chef boy r dee pizza mixes myself! I do love processed foods, i admit. I have to say that bertrand is the main force behind us eating organic and non processed. Plus, we just dont have all the processed pre-made stuff here in europe ( we dont even own a microwave) so it is just part of everyday life to walk to the fresh market and buy what we need.
