It was a year ago that I deided to embark on a dining room makeover (and what a long, drawn-out process it has been - just ask kelly ;)
but, here is the final result. I am really proud of it for the first time, i feel our dining room works for how we use it. before, it was a catch-all for lots of crap, ie mail, don's music equipment, etc. and the walls are huge so filling them with art was cost-prohibitive so i decided to just paint the walls with chalkboard paint and have Ivy draw pictures...lol It works out really well.
I also found those frames at family dollar for under $5, the cabinet was $100 and painted with chalkboard paint. it is filled with white dishes (they are nothing to write home about, just stuff from pier one, homegooods, etc.) the leaning shelf i already owned, along with the mirror above the piano. the chairs were from BB&B and with coupon they were about $50 - the slipcovers came from word market. the arm chairs were the most expensive (they are Pottery Barn Grayson chairs that i found on Craigslist) the rug is from west elm and it is a 9x12 and i got it on clearance for $181 including shipping!! i made the curtains myself. the rods were just left over damaged pieces they had at big lots that i got for $5. The light fixture is a knock off of the PB Hundi lantern that i found on Overstock.
it was ALOT of work and the most important lesson i learned was.....DON"T STEP ON THE TOP RUNG OF A LADDER!!! ;)
oh i wanted to add that my BIGGEST fear with this dining room and getting the Queen Anne table and chairs and that cabinet was that it would look like "grandma's" dining room. I think I have succeeded in avoiding that look ;) or in going too far "shabby chic" (i like that look, but a little goes along way) I also think the room could use more color and plan to add some in the fall.
i think it looks great! it looks like you must have a lot of natural light in that room so even with the black paint it isn't too dark. i could never pull that off in my house. very pretty!!!

Thanks corey! yeah...that was a fear (well...don's fear ;) about it being dark and gloomy with the black paint. I don't think it does at all though. it is one of my favorite parts of the room.
btw i love how the chairs look...they really came together.
i actually have to buy two more - the ones next to the cabinet are the older ones. it is just one of those things i have been putting off b/c my car will only fit one at a time and the store is about 30 minutes away. kind of a pain.l
eta that knowing my luck - i'll procrastinate long enought and BB&B will stop selling them...lol

It looks great Liz. You really have an eye for design/decorating. I think the looks works great for the home you have too!
Thank you, Michele!! You won't believe how hard this room was to decorate (with the bay window and the fact that it is essentially a "hallway" (our house is what they call a "shotgun")
