So, let's say that you were a member in a Facebook community for a brand.

The community is having a contest, wanting you to offer up your best tip for a particular season. (e.g., best tip for enjoying the holidays with family, best way to make a household budget, etc.)

The community gets to vote on which tip they like best. That person will win the grand prize, and the first runner up will be decided on by the brand.

What is the least amount of money the brand would have to offer to interest you in the contest?

What other types of prizes would interest you most?

TIA for any help!!!

Hmmmm I'm cheap LOL

$100?? More is great but in this economy $100 can help a lot

Other prizes - gift cards, electronics

You may want to offer some kind of free product coupon just for replying, you will def get more responses that way.

LL had some good ideas.

i find that people just LIKE to participate in those types of discussions on fb so i think you'd get participation no matter what.

with $100 prize you'd probably bump that up a bit. i was thinking that for $500, people would go pretty crazy trying to win that.

i think that free product coupons are always good, but i'd suggest it be mailed since MOST of the stores around me no longer accept a printable Q for a free product.

one time i posted a pic of my coffee mug on the international delight fb page and won a free stainless mug. people went NUTS over that. they gave out 5, but i bet that they had 100 pics + posted in an hour.

It definitely helps if there are a few freebies dispensed to five or ten random folks and/or something for everyone just for entering.

I also think that the more prizes are involved, the cheaper/smaller the individual prizes can be and still gather lots of participation.

For a tip? I think people would be willing to give that info even without a prize so I can't imagine it would need to be all that much for actual participation. However, if the goal is for people to really get into the spirit of a competition, well that is another story. As far as sharing with friends and all that, I think the prize would have to be more so that people really want to win. It's hard because I find that FB "contests" are usually about who has more friends than who has the best (fill in the blank.)

Just wanted that a few if my fave sites do giveaways often- pioneer woman and bakerella. Pw does give a lot of high end stuff, like kitchenaids- but bakerella has fans going crazy for stuff like a cookbook, cupcake wrappers, etc. A lot of it is not expensive, but it is cute/trendy. Thought i would throw that out there uf you want to go look. (bakerella u might have to go back a while, she is recovering from a kidney transplant atm,)

I think everyone already said this, but most of the brands I have on my facebook give away free product. I rarely see a cash prize per say.

Like shoffee dot com gives random stuff for questions, etc.

This. And thus I am always a bit disgruntled when there is a true cash prize cuz it doesnt seem really fair. .

Another thought, if the prize is directly related to the tip, it may also help. So if it was for Halloween, you could give away a "Halloween Party" by providing candy, decorations, serving dishes, etc.

These are some great answers.

In terms of a prize, I love gift cards, it is more likely to get my interest than mugs and souvenirs.

Just so you know, contests on FB are no longer allowed. If they see one happening they can shut down your page. You can talk about a contest on FB, but voting isn't allowed. You can use blog comments for this.

 Hi -

Thanks for the advice. I would hate to get something shut down, LOL

That said, that's not actually correct.

You just have to do it within the guidelines.

http://www.facebook.com/promotions_guidelines.php

The app/tab stipulation is prohibitive for lots of companies, unfortunately, because they can be expensive

And I don't think that FB actually enforces the guidelines well... check out the Melissa + Doug page, for example

But I do appreciate the post!
