School snacks

I'm looking for inspiration on something healthy for Joe to take for snack at school.  His new teachers have asked that it be something 'nutritious', which to me means not just a carb.  Last year he ended up mainly taking goldfish or pretzels, because his snack time was in the afternoon, but this year is in the morning.  I still think it is too hot for him to take cheese or ham, even in a thermos bag, and he isn't allowed to take nuts.

What does your child take for snack at school?

Thanks

last year in preschool when Nolan had to bring the snacks we also had to bring something healthy.

These are some of the things I brought:

string cheese
apple slices (I would get the presliced, pre-packaged ones from Costco)
bananas (I usually just got enough for the whole class to half 1/2 banana)
pudding cups
applesauce cups
carrot sticks

You have to be a little more creative and it cost a little more, but I'm happy when the schools insist on being a little healthier in the snack times.

Nolan is starting K this year and we don't bring snacks. I have a feeling he is going to get mostly goldfish crackers. I will be making his lunch though, so at least I know he'll me getting something healthy then. I wouldn't be making his lunch if he weren't so danged picky.

There are a fantastic new kid's size organic granola bar by Cascadian Farms.  They are oatmeal raisin, and super yummy.  They are nut free too.

They will be a daily staple for us, more than likely :)

Just fyi- these ARE smaller than normal granola bar- probably like 3/4 the size or so.

We provide our own snack every day (which I'm quite happy about (when I'm not getting it ready)). I'd hate it if people were constantly sending junk.

we do red peppers cut up, carrots cut up, applesauce, sometimes mini sandwiches (using the little hamburger buns and a slice of ham and cheese), occasional goldfish, granolo bars (on fridays as a treat), apples, pears, etc. sometimes juice box, sometimes water.

thankfully, he gets his lunch provided at his afterschool/lunch program so its just the snack we need to provide.

Thanks, you guys. I think we might try him taking cheese and see how it survives til snack time.

Chickie, thank you for the ideas. He has never had string cheese cause I don't like them, so never get them, but he would probably love them.

Jenn, thanks for pointing out the granola bars, he loves those too but I never feel like I can send them cause usually they aren't peanut-safe. I should probably get him to help me make some granola bars too, I think he would get a kick out of that.

Sonya, mini sandwiches are a fantastic idea. I think I get so caught up on what I think is a snack type food I forget to think of the meal-y type foods.

Lucy-I know it isn't as hot here as it is there, but we have had very good luck sending snacks in for Anna in thermos type containers. And we have a snack type container that has a cold pack that clips into the lid-I freeze it and the cheese or fruit stays chilled through the day. Their snack time was closer to dismissal-around 2pmish I think (because they were the first lunch, at 10:30am). (school starts at 8am, btw)

we also do things like granola bars, cheese, raisins, carrots (but she will only eat them with dip), etc. No drinks-they just drink water in the classroom. And some days we do things like goldfish or pretzels and I don't stress about it-towards the end of the year, she started coming home with her snack uneaten because some of them chose to play during that time instead of eat.

Do you use the ice packs as well as the thermal lunchbox?

I find they last pretty well.

It might be worth it to invest in a good one.

Or send carbs until it cools down and then start sending stuff that requires a cold pack.

In addition to some of the snacks mentioned by others, we like those applesauces (that come in a pouch with a little screw top?)
Also fruit cups.
cheese sticks are not just string cheese. They also come in chedder and colby jack for a bit of variety.
my kids love snow.snap peas
