Nope. We went back to velcro because it was causing frustration.
My almost 13 yo nephew had untied shoes constantly until the really loose shoes with the huge tongues came into style. Now they are well knotted and he slips them on, lol.
I feel like I have much bigger fish to fry than tying shoes. And with Kate I am just happy if they end up on the right feet!
Hannah doesn't tie yet :) We haven't tried much but just as insight from me since Han is older, she doesn't do it yet. I'm not sure about her classmates, it seems like many wear slip ons/velcro.
LOL, Mason? Um, no. I don't even try. John has shown him a couple of times, but it's just not something Mason cares enough about to not get too frustrated to even do it, so we don't push it. I'm glad to see it's uncommon for kids his age to tie than not to tie!
At the district next to mine, the teachers tell the kids they'll be kicked out of kinder if they can't tie. My gf's kid was TERRIFIED. For Hannah it's just frustration of wanting to do it. I'm going to work with her this week (thanks for the laces tip, Juni) without pushing it, just because I'm actually home and *can*, but now I won't be as concerned if the dime doesn't drop with it.

That's just effing stupid. Kicking a child out of kindergarten because they can't tie their shoes? Where is that school's priorities??
She has no interest right now at all! Could be because she's always had velcro shoes LOL. She did learn to tie her karate belt last month (pretty complicated!) so I'm sure she could if she wanted to learn. I've come to realize I need to follow her lead though and when I push her to keep trying something, we take 10 steps backwards.
I hope she's not tying the laces for the "right" reasons and not because she is lazy. I would be furious (ok, maybe not furious but friggin pissed!)if I knew Meghan was walking around with her laces untied and noone offered to help her. Do they let them go to the playground like that?
With 24 kids in Raven's class I try to send her in clothes/shoes that she can do independently. I'm not saying teacher don't or shouldn't help but I think kids need to work on it at home(button and zippers also). Threating to kick kids out of k is pathetic.
When Nolan starts kinder next year he is also required to know how to tie laces and they prefer he have laces on his shoes. He's pretty stressed about it, but we will just work on it over the summer. Everything I've pushed him to learn, he has done so, which needs me to believe I will just have to work with him consistently on it. He is 100% on everything else they would like him to know before he starts, so if it's just this one thing, then I'm not going to worry too much. We will figure it out.
As far as why they want him to have laces on his shoes, I'm not 100% sure. I understand them wanting him to have tennis shoes, but not sure why it needs to be laces instead of velcro. It's one of the things I will ask about when I meet with his teacher before school starts in the fall. Just because I'm curious though. I'm sure there is a good reason.
Nope... and he's tried a handful of different times. I've even tried buying a book that has laces and a story to teach you how to tie. It didn't work. He just gets so frustrated. We are back to slip on shoes and flip flops.

I just talked to Lucas' teacher about this because I heard our district did this and his teacher said that they used to hold kids back in K for that but no longer do... THANK GOODNESS!!!

I missed the kicking out part. Ridiculous. Kari - I cannot believe they used to hold kids back for that. Unbelievable.
