I read this last night and have been trying to wrap my head around it.
To deal with a huge debt, state education officials have ordered half of detroit public schools to close- which (according to reports) could drive the size of high school classes up to 60.
I'm sure there is more to the story, but doesn't that sound beyond off the wall? Take a failing school system and just mash them all together? Can you even imagine trying to teach a high school class of 60? That is a far cry from a college class of 60. Way different. And frankly. a class of 60 college freshman is it's own level of hell and those are suppsedly the "brightest".
We are having several schools here close and consolidate- no where to this level- but it makes me wonder where does it stop? What is it about public education that is unsustainable?
I don't have a slanted opinion on this one. I'm confused how it got this bad, and have no clue how to dig out of it. However, since it is a very hot button issue for some, I put it here.
Here is a short snippet on the Detroit schools. Doesn't give a lot of background: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2011/02/21/national/main20034397.shtml
Detroit Public Schools have been suffering for so long. This goes back eons. I mean they have had corrupt leadership, embezzling, etc.
It is so sad.
We have a new governor that people screamed for change, well, they got it.
These are kids that come from poverty and not a lot of parent support. It is shameful to me that out of all the things to cut, we cut this?
Detroit is a mess and I have no idea how they will survive this. The economy has killed Detroit. It was the motor city and not diverse. Everything that was in Detroit was here because of the big 3. So, it is suffering as a whole.

I'm gonna have my little on in private school when she is old enough. or find her a tutor or something and stay away from bad areas. That's what makes me scared about her. I hope she will have a good education. I will teach her everything I can.
i was just reading about tx cutting school budgets, closing schools etc
what i dont understand is:
a) why people (voting citizens) would do this to their own children by not funding schools b) why schools have to close. are other things being drastically cut? are those things even remotely as important as teaching our children??
as an aside, i wonder if texas has thought through the implications of vastly increasing class sizes and how it affects their beloved TAKS test
