washer/dryer recommendations

I'm moving soon and need a washer and dryer. I have never purchased a washer and dryer before and could use some recommendations on brand and features.

I really like the idea of front loaders cause I heard they are more energy efficient and use less water and detergent but they seem so pricey. Are they worth it?

I don't have the HE, but they do have top loading HE washers now. I haven't had the front load, but I think the top load would be more convenient, personally.

And the HE washers apparently get build up or something-you can't use much soap from what I hear-and they sell things to use to clean them out from time to time.

I wish I had recommendations. I keep waiting for mine to die, but they just keep hanging on!!!! Good luck shopping!!

alyssa, i had maytag front loader from 2005-2010. i was not a fan.

it got smelly.

it didn't hold as many clothes as i thought it would.

i will have to buy new w/d set for the new house and i'm really look at the top loader HE machines without the agitator. they supposedly hold more than the front loaders, are energy efficient, use very little water, and don't get the mold problem that the front loaders have.

if you want me to share some links, i can.

this is the one i'm thinking of getting. it's cheaper than a front loader, has a larger capacity than my old one and hopefully won't give the smell that the other one did. it's also supposed to be better for sheets - ie, they won't get tangled and twisted like they do in the agitator top loaders.

that looks nice. which dryer are you buying?

I'm torn. I feel like it's just a rental apt so I should go with something cheap and wait to buy a nice one til I have a house. But I could always take it with me. But then will it be old and I don't want it?

I'm so bad with decisions.

i'm not sure if the house has gas or electric, but it will be the matching dryer.

you can always sell what you buy used on craigslist and upgrade later if you want.

idk.

My gf just built a place and upgraded her w/d to the one that April posted. She adores it and has no complaints. she wanted a front loader for forever, but she's glad she went with the top loader without the agitator.

Now I'm thinking that when I upgrade that's what we will do because with my back the way it is getting a front loader is a beast because we'd have to have the pedestals to elevate them, which in the grand scheme of things isn't a big deal, but when you are shelling out money like that it's a cost I don't want to have to add to. (ftr, my sisters have front loaders and love them. My mom has one - not on pedestals, so it kills me, but anyways - hers gets stinky really quick.

My only recommendation depends on where the w/d will be.

Ours are cheap apt ones and are smack dab in the middle of the apt. They are SO loud. If I knew how loud theyd be, I'd have invested a lot more money in quiet ones.

Because we do most of our laundry when we are all home, the extra noise is awful.

Sonya, that is a good point. The washer/dryer will be in the half bathroom downstairs.

alyssa, that's our setup in our new house too.  the half bath on the main level has a half wall and the w/d go on the other side.  i've been paying close attention to noise reviews.

when are you moving again?  i have to buy something in mid-march, so if you have the time to wait until i get these, i can give you a first hand review.

my parents bought us a front loader washer/dryer two years ago for christmas I love them, but april is right about the smell. They do make a washer cleaner from tide now though.

I love my timer feature. Im gone for church for a while so Ill toss clothes in before I leave and set it to start in 2 hours so I can put in in the dryer when I get home and its just getting done.

Mine are in the half bath on the main level as well.

We have Kenmore Elites front loader and then matching dryer bought them last year at this time. I have liked them.
