weight watchers?

so i am considering doing a weight watchers plan - i'm not in it for weight loss, but more structure and healthier meal ideas.  since C has started preschool i've been eating OUT of control and it needs to stop.  plus mike is trying to lose weight too, so i thought even if we werent stringent about points and whatnot, access to the meal plans wouldnt be a bad idea.

how does it work exactly? would the plan fit these goals? is it all online? is it worth the money? are the recipes good? (i'm a pretty plain eater) - any info is appreciated - i never considered doing this before. thanks!

I haven't done WW but are you looking for the accountability or just a resource for some structure? I know there are a lot of great online places that you can keep track of what you are eating daily and structure it around what your goals are. Also, they can help you figure out what kind of a structure you could do. You could look at myfitnesspal.com

But, since Mike *is* looking to lose weight, WW could be a great option in that he could do it to lose weight and you could use the info to help your eating habits. I've only heard great things about WW and you still get to eat the foods you normally eat.

Also, I just got a WW cookbook this year for christmas and it has a lot of great recipes in it.

Kelly. I think for you healthy cook books may work better. I just do not think it is really what you need. You could just but weight wat hers cook books.

Also, online there are ton of healthy eating plans that have menus to help you meal plan, etc.

i totally didnt know WW puts out a cookbook. that's what i need i think. i do like the points idea just to get under control (i'm seriously pigging out lately - cant get a grip since thanksgiving) - but maybe just a cookbook or an online plan would be enough. thanks guys!!

I think myfitnesspal would be good for you to track your food. It would allow you to see where your bad is. See you calories, carbs, fat, protein, etc.

For Mike since he eats out so much he could track too if he wants. If anything it is eye opening. I bet his sodium is through the roof with eating out a lot. Just reducing that could be huge for him, plus healthier.

I agree with Melissa, I think just a cookbook would be all that you need!

I really like my fitness pal dot com too.

I think you can still sign up for the free trial, Kelly. You could do a week and see if it is helpful.

I like it because I have to think before I randomly shovel food in. I'm generally not a hungry person and I rarely eat because I'm hungry. WW helps me to control the eating of things I don't need but lets me eat whatever I do need.

If you sign up, I think you'd have to sign up as Mike. I'm pretty sure WW won't let you sign up if you are below your normal BMI level (which I'd assume you are close to).

The cook books are great. And I do think it's a great weight loss/maintaining system and would be a good fit for Mike.

I was able to do it (and lose 30 lbs) while eating almost every meal out while I was traveling for work. It really kept me accountable.

(If the free trial isn't available, let me know and I'll send you my account info and you can take a look around and see what you think of the online tools).

thanks sonya! i think that's it for me too - i just shovel food in, and i'm noticign that i have "bad" associations now too -- like, if they kids are out, i indulge because i have the freedom to do that (5 years of doing SAHM thing i think does that to you - you just have SO little freedom that you find pleasure wherever you can) -- or if the phone rings, i'm straight to the cabinet the way a social smoker would be kwim? i try to replace those impulses with a cup of tea, but it's not the same :)
even right now, i'm IMing a friend and my impulse is to get cookies out, but it's 815 am!

i definitely dont want to lose weight (except these few holiday pounds, but i'm ok with it - they'll go away) - i just need to concentrate more on what i'm eating and why.

i'm amazon-ing a cookbook now. i think i'll start there and if i cant get these habits normalized, i'll look into the free trial -  i'll let you know what happens!

You know, the other thing that worked for me in the past was just to keep a list of everything I ate on a piece of paper.

something about having to write it down would keep me from just randomly shoving cookies in.
