When Cobb and Ariadne are in level 4 with Cobb's wife, Cobb says he's going to stay because he knows Sato is dead and he wants to help him find his way back.
But Sato dies in level 3 while they are asleep in level 4. So how do they know?
I loved it too. I focused too much on the end - did it start to fall??? That wasn't really the point. The point is that he no longer cared. But anyway, LOVED it. I just watched it right after Christmas and am dying to watch it again and pick up all the little things you miss the first time around.
So, my initial alternate explanation was that the whole thing had been orchestrated by Cobb's father to retrieve Cobb.... like it was HIM that had been lost in an alternate reality, and Ariadne and everyone were working to save him. (Maybe it was he who was lost, and not Mal... or maybe both he and Mal were lost?)
I think it was the parallel in the story line with Robert Fischer and his father -- and some of the quotes there -- that made me start to think this. Like what was the point of having Cobb's father recommend Ariadne? The whole thing would've stood just fine without all of that, KWIM?
When I was googling to answer the question above, I came across this interesting bit: http://blog.moviefone.com/2010/07/19/dissecting-inception-six-interpretations-and-five-plot-holes/
The whole thing was just really SO well done, because you just don't know.
I totally want to watch it again, but we bought it on Apple TV, so we only have it for 24hrs, and I don't think I'll have time.
You inspired us to watch it last night. It's been sitting around on blur-ray waiting to be watched.
I really liked it. I couldn't stop compairing/thinking of Total Recall (one of my favorite movies) and Shutter Island (especially the wife part).
Very interesting and so hard to put my head around. Especially the limbo/dying/aging/coming back young thing. I'll have to think about that for a while.
Toni you should watch 500 days of Summer. It might help you think of the third rock from the sun kid as an adult. Even though he's early 20's in the movie, I didn't think of him as that kid as I was watching it. Plus it's a really good movie.
