I voted Ruby Anne.  I just think it sounds very classy and beautiful.  My cousin just named his little girl Ruby.  I hadn't heard that name in ages and loved the sound of it.

i love it too - i've been hearing a lot of it around here though.

This is one concern I've had, it is definitely gaining in popularity.  I don't mind my kid having a fairly common name, I just don't want there to be 5 little girls named Ruby in her K class....

I'm actually leaning toward Penelope, but DH prefers Ruby.  AND, all three of my little girls (if this is a girl) will be born in July, for which Ruby is the birthstone.  I thought that would be kind of cute....

My only problem with Penelope is that there aren't any nicknames that I love for it - Nelly, Penny, etc.

oh i know, i thought about ruby for a middle name bc of rachel's july bday too - love the idea.  there's one ruby in R's kindergarten, one in her ballet (she's a year younger, it's a 4-5 yr class), and i know of 3 rubys who are 2 and under.   it's SUCH a cute name, but yeah, it seems to be the it-name around here right now.

i like penny, you dont like it?

You know how someone from your past, even if you barely knew them, can totally change the connotation you have for a name?  Well, that's the case with Penny.  There was a girl I went to school with through middle school named Penny - and she was a total biatch!  So, when I think of the name, I can't help but think of her....maybe I could get over it though.

I've heard/seen people call Penelope Cruz "Pene".  That's kind of cute.

I don't know anyone--young or old--named Ruby around here.

I think it's a sweet name.

I like Ruby Anne. I don't know a single Ruby.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but if you use the name Penelope you might want to be sure you have a nick name. I always think of the mean kid teasing factor and some of the names that rhyme are not so good.... dope, antelope, grope. mope

I do like the name Penne though.

my MIL is Ruby.

My MIL's mother's name was Ruby Kate.

I had thought about naming our daughter Ruby Kate and actually had lots of my IRL friends suggest it but my son is named after my DH who is named after his dad . . so I would have inlaws named John and Ruby and children named John and Ruby so it was not going to work for us but I do really like the name Ruby for a baby girl!

The mean names you mentioned look like Penelope, but they don't rhyme with the way i say the name.  I am so bad at writing out how I pronounce something, but I say puh-nell-uh-pee .  I can't think of any thing that actually rhymes with it.  BUT, I do like nicknames and Penne/Pene is my top one for this name.

I had a student in TX named Guadalupe, but everyone called her Lupe (lou-pay).  I always thought that was a cute nickname.  What about Lope - is that too silly sounding?

Ruby Kate sounds great!  BUT, since I already have a Katie I wouldn't be able to use that.  Plus, both of our girls have family names, so I need to work that in somehow....

I like Lope. And I pronounce Penelope the same way you do. I was thinking "Opie" would be a cute nn.

One time I heard a little boy call his big sister "Opie", and it sounded adorable. The sister's name was Hope.

I think you are right on the pronounciation and my blond is showing through.  Although, I do swear I have heard it pronounced the other way, but you are correct in the pronounciation.

I do like any of the nn you are thinking about.  I Lope would be different but not too different.  I also like Robin's Opie too.  Either way, I think it's good to have more than one option available so you can see which one fits her best.
