Q: Star wars "stuff" and Nintendo DS lite
Permalink

So, Im totally stumped this year for christmas. Other than pillow pets, which I think Kyle is less than thrilled about since we need more stuffed animals like we need a hole in the head.  But they are relatively cheap and something the kids have been begging for for months.

Kiera has a leapster and a tag.  Rhys is a little young for both, so, not buying a new one of either of those.  But, I will get some games and books for the one we have.  I thought about upgrading K to a DS or a DS lite, but I know NOTHING about them. Are they appropriate for 5year old? do they have similarly fun educational games? how much do the games cost? Anyone have any thoughts as to Leapster v. Nintendo DS Lite?
Im still really in the "tossing around" ideas stage.

K has requested "a star wars set, but not legos".  SEriously her Santa letter went something like this "I know I am a girl, but I want star wars." lol.  Cool, but I have no idea what to get.  Thoughts from you moms of boys or similar girls that want star wars?

Hannah has a ds, as do many of her friends. They are fantastic and worth every single penny. Hannah plays hers all the time, and it's a lifesaver anywhere that we need to keep her amused and well behaved when she gets restless.

Hannah's little boyfriend loves Star Wars, but he mostly just plays with the figurines, so no help there. But you could get her a Star Wars game from the ds and make her a SW skin to cover it. That's what we did for him last year, and we did Hannah's in Alice in Wonderland.

We decided not to introduce the DS until Koda actually asks for it.  We figure we have YEARS ahead of us that will be all things videogames.  For now, we are staying with the Leapster.

As for Star Wars, I know there are tons of sets out right now.  I would probably take her for a trip to Toysrus or Walmart and ask her to point out what she wrote santa about.

She would do fine with a DS.

As far as Star Wars. There is Star Wars Trouble or other games. A light saber and then we have some of the figurines. There is also a DS and Wii Star Wars Lego game. It Is fun and cheap.

Hannah adores her DS! Tons of fun game options and I agree with Leah worth every single penny. Lifesaver on many occasions. Can't go wrong there. I can't help on the Star Wars question :)

Erin - if you're going to buy the DS lite, get it at Walmart tomorrow. I think it's like $80 or $90 (great deal)!

I'm getting the girls DSis, and those don't seem to be on sale ATM. I'm hopeful something will turn up soon.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Oh I didn't really answer the rest of your questions, Hannah has a leapster as well and plays it once in awhile I think for her compared to the DS it's boring, but she is a little older. She has been playing her ds for easily a year and a half though. The games can be anywhere from $14.99 to I think $39.99? We have only bought one that was almost $40 and it was a Mario Brothers game all the others she is interested in are in the $20 range. TRU was just having a buy one get one half sale so I scored a game for Kent's mom and a game for Hannah for $45. They were both new games priced at $29.99 before the sale. Hannah's is a barbie glam puppies game or something like that. I am not sure the differences between the DS and DS lite. We have the lite, I asked Kent and he just said he thinks the regular DS is the first that was released.

If you miss it on black Friday, KMart is having a Saturday sale from 6am-noon with the DS lite for 89.99.

Yay!! Another girlie Star Wars groupie! Meghan is obsessed with Star Wars. As far as toys, she mostly collects the action figures but she has some puzzles, coloring books, etc. I'm glad she doesn't want the SW Lego sets. Major meltdown material. They build a starship, go to play with it, and the whole thing falls apart one piece at a time.

:pullinghair:

Her "big" toy this year is the ATaT (did I get that right? LOL). Again, not the Lego version.

And as far as the DS, YYYYYYEEEEESSSSS!! It is definitely a lifesaver, especially on long car trips or if one kid has a doctor's appt. and the other doesn't. And a lot of Meghan's friends have them in her class so I don't think 5 is too young at all. I do suggest a case for at least a little while though. We have a nerf one but I think we're going to take it off soon b/c she's really careful with it. There are some SW games for the DS but believe it or not, Meghan doesn't have any yet. She's still working on the games she has. She does have the SW Lego for the Wii and loves it though.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone! In the interests of keeping costs down since we are going on a disney cruise right after Christmas I decided to go with a aouple of leapster Star wars ames and a board game that was star wars themed. That and a pillow pet and a couple of disney barbies are the main toys this year. I figured like someone said that I would wait un til she was asking for a more advanced video game.

I think Im done shopping!
