I don't know at lot about them but we have two bitty babies (one of the twins and a bitty baby).
They have soft bodies. And the twins come in one box (i believe).
I think they are lovely dolls but I don't know if I can say they are worth the money. I had never heard of them before we went to the stores (or from here, probably) so they don't have the nostalgic part for me. The quality is great, I'd have to say, but it's still a lot of money.
Charlie insisted on keeping the bitty twin I bought for Josie (her twin is with Clara in Lux - I swear its a real life bitty twin disney movie ;) ) and he played with her for about a week, tops.
Josie's likes her doll but she doesn't really play with dolls that much.
If she's into dolls when she gets older, I'd love to get her one and then hit the store in NY or Chicago but I'll wait until we can do that together.
So, I don't know if that answers your question or not.
We have both the bitty baby baby and a twin. My friend's daughter has the other twin. Elizabeth does like them but at this point I think she would like one of the other American Girl dolls better. I think a big thing may be the hair on the American Girl dolls may be better. Elizabeth's favorite doll is one by madame alexander that looks similar to this one but with strawberry blond hair
I think Target has something similar too. Honestly it might be good to just stick with one less expensive and then just wait and see if she starts requesting specifically for a certain American Girl doll. Granted I wanted to get the Elizabeth one for my Elizabeth since the doll is being discontinued. I asked her about it and she said she didn't want it so I am trying to let it go.
Target has Our Generation Dolls for like 30 that are like the AG 18'inch dolls. That may be an idea for K. For the boys I would not honestly spend the money if they are not big into playing dolls. The Bitty's are soft body and we love them at our house, but I have two huge doll lovers. We totally are into AG. I think Allie has no clue the cost, but loves the clothes and accessories.
I am buying some of the our generation stuff this Christmas for Allie. They have some cute outfits and stuff.
we have 4 AG dolls (i know i know - they've each gotten one for christmas and one for their bday). the quality is great. a friend has the target version and the hair gets really kinked up and matted, and can't be brushed. the AG hair can be brushed and it stays REALLY beautiful (and curled, if you get a curly haired doll) -- i think the hair alone is worth the money.
plus you can get them fixed if they break (a friend of mine got her kid's doll a random outfit that discolored the legs, and was able to get new legs (she had to pay a bit though) - but they sent the doll back as if it had come back from the hospital, complete with a hospital bracelet -- cute).
they really do hold up though. cara throws hers down the stairs all the time and they are completely perfect still. and you can magic-erase crayon off the faces without any discoloration (these are all things i have learned by cara having them WAY too young - but when you have 2 sisters, ya gotta do whatcha gotta do).
i havent bought the AG accessories. i get outfits through the target brand. my kids definitely are having fun with them without the accessories. they usually just play with them generically - like they play school, tea party, birthday party, easter morning, etc. it's not so much about the individual doll's story or historical period for them (at this point anyway).
