I'm thinking about getting Ethan a Wii for Christmas but I am so clueless about this stuff.
Do I just need to buy the console? Are there accessories we'll need? What are the best games for kindergarten-aged kids? Anything I'm going to want for myself?
Want to start pricing it out so I know how much I'll need to save.
There are a lot of packages out there, that come with the Wii Sports game, controllers, and the nunchucks. And, that's what I'd recommend doing. It's really fun to play together, so I'd really recommend 2 controllers, 2 nunchucks, and I'd invest in the wii-mote control charger. We've saved a ton of money on batteries with ours.
In all honesty, you'd probably be more than fine just with the Wii Sports game - it's got a lot of great stuff, and you'll play it forever. There is a Wii version of the game Marvel Ultimate Alliance, which I think Ethan would love eventually, but I don't know that I'd necessarily invest much in games besides the Sports until he gets a feel for it, especially if its his first gaming experience.
it comes with one remote and nunchuck and I believe wii sports?? (you will have to check what game comes with it, it may have changed)
You def want another remote & nunchuck but there are some bundles that come with the remote and the game (we got Wii Play with ours).
Games I am kind of clueless on as we haven't gotten any new ones in a while and it is on my list of things to get Lucas for Xmas. I have heard Mario Kart is a good one for this age and there is a steering wheel attachment you can get. My nephew has a Toy story game and Lucas has played that at his house and seems to like it.
I recently got wii points and downloaded the original Super Mario Bros. I want a wii fit for xmas for after the baby is born.

Oh yeah definitely the charger!!!!!
we do not have a charger - we use batteries and have only had to replace them a handful of times since we got it for Christmas last year. When we first got it we played a ton - the entire family, bowling every night. As summer got here Jake plays it more than anyone - a few times per week.
I think it comes with Wii sports and that has alot of different games that are fun and kept us occupied for awhile. It did come with one controller and 1 nunchuck. I think 2 remotes and 2 nunchucks are all you will need.
Since we got it at Christmas I've only bought a few games - Super Mario Brothers, Mario Kart, Wii Play, Wii Sports Resort, Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olypmic Games (we got this a few weeks before the last Olympics so it made it fun to play!). The games are a bit pricey - I think I spent $40-$50 on each of the games.
Super Mario Bros. is pretty hard based on what I see and hear watching Jake and DH play it. It seems very frustrating! Jake does really enjoy it though.
Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympics - we have all played this at some point and it is alot of fun and Jake really enjoys it and will play by himself alot.
Mario Kart - another of Jake's favorites. We all play with him from time to time but honeestly, I suck and constantly run off the road and it makes me miserable to play! The game comes with 1 wheel but you can buy another Nerf wheel for $10 at WalMart (and imo the Nerf wheel is better than the one that comes with the game!).
Wii Sports Resort is fun (but it takes a special remote (motion plus) and one of these comes with the game). I like playing this with Jake - it is a variety of games. Jake does like this one alot too b/c he can do sword play and racing jet skis.
For me I bought EA Sports Active - I used it once. It's a good work out but yeah, I suck.
I'm glad we bought it. It definitely is a much bigger "family" hit at my house in the winter months. Jake used it more than anyone throughout the summer.
You've gotten some great advice. You guys are going to love it!
We have Sports Resort and Mason probably plays that more than anything else. We also have Toy Story Mania, which I love, Mario Kart (super fun for everyone), and Super Mario, which is waaaaay too hard for Mason.
I would like to know more about Toy Story Mania. Do they need to use more than one controller when playing it? Does it involve pushing multiple buttons? The reason I ask is we have a Disney princess game, and it is a bit too complicated for E to use two different controllers at once with various buttons to push.
Super Mario for the Wii is SOOOOOOOO hard. I totally suck at it and I had to forbid Lucas from playing it because it would cause too many tantrums. I hate Mario & Sonic Olympics LOL I think it's also too hard hahahaha.
Libby I am pretty sure Toy Story Mania just uses the controller not the nunchuck but it does use multiple buttons.

It's just one controller, and I think you only have to press one button in most of the games. It's based on the Toy Story Midway Mania rides at Disney's California Adventure and WDW, so they are fairly easy to learn quickly.

this explains alot!!! Jake loves to play it, it's really hard. He begs his dad to play with him. Daddy used to agree and play! Daddy ends up yelling at the tv, cussing and overall making it not a pleasant father/son bonding experience for him and Jake. I have threatened a dozen times that I'm going to throw the game away (and I'm not even kidding!).
DH now refuses to play it for the most part. When they do play, he then hides it so the kids can't play it and "undo" whatever it was they accomplished earlier.
Seriously, would not recommend Super Mario Brothers!!!!!!!!!!
Super Mario Brothers was a hit here forever!! John played the most beating the entire thing for the boys. But honestly, Owen does awesome and still plays it.
Other games that get played here....Mario Kart, Wii Play, Wii Sports, Skate It. Bryce likes to play the sport games, Madden, Bigs, etc.
