Do you have a go-to meal that you make when you have company over for dinner? If so what is it?
DH invited his Grandpa over for dinner one night because his Grandma is out of town and I realized that we usually make the same thing when we have guests over.
We always seem to serve some kind of Pasta (usually spaghetti or lasagna), salad, garlic bread and some sort of desert.
If I'm having a lot of people over, I'll make a lasagna or two. That way I can make it ahead of time and then just pop it in the oven when they get there.
If I know i'm having adventurous guests, I'll make a killer puttanesca. I use fresh spaghetti and yum... now I want that for supper.
If it's a less adventurous group, I'll make a roast chicken: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/My-Favorite-Simple-Roast-Chicken-231348 --- with mashed potatoes, veggies, gravy.
If i have lots of time, I'll make this in the dutch oven: http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/food/views/Pot-Roast-with-Winter-Root-Vegetables-241338 (the picture is disgusting-looking but it's super delicious).
In summer, I'll make homemade hamburgers on the bbq.
Or we've done homemade pizzas if there are kids - that way each family can put together what they like.
It's been so long since we've had people over (besides doug's parents) that I can't even answer this question. It sucks because I never want to do a new recipe for someone because I don't want to screw it up but I hate doing the same old thing.
I know in the past I've done lasagna or this pasta/chicken dish. I've also done crockpot things because I hate trying to time something with people coming over - I don't want to be all busy when they're here but I don't want it done too soon, kwim?
6 chicken breasts (these days they are so huge (ie. Genetically modified) in the US, take 4 and cut in half - make each a serving size
8-10 slices bacon
Dried beef
1 can cream of mushroom soup
Equal quantity (about a cup) sour cream
Roughly chop dried beef and scatter on bottom of baking dish. Take each chicken breast (a serving size) and wrap 1 or 2 slices of bacon around and place on top of dried beef. Mix soup and sour cream and spread on top of chicken. You can make this in the morning, cover with Saran wrap and put in fridge. 3 hours before dinner, bake uncovered at 225 degrees. ( if u are short on time you can bake it at, say 350 degrees for a good hour)
Serve with rice and green beans (spoon yummy sauce over all!)

I know you explained before Megan, but where do I get dried beef?

Do you think it would change the taste dramatically if another cream soup was used? (DH is allergic to mushrooms)
Sonia -equally yummy without. The us main brand is hormel. Google image dried beef u can see what it looks like. Ask your grocer where / if they carry it. But u don't need it for sure!
Kari- I Would imagine cream of chicken would work just fine.or any other similar cream soup.
Y'all should try it!

I just remembered a dish I made that was so good! I copied it from Outback and it turned out really well. It's chicken breasts and then you put mushrooms, bacon on top of that and then cheese on top of that and bake in the oven.
There is also a really yummy honey mustard that I used to coat the chicken a little bit and then it goes on the side. Very yummy. I don't like mushrooms so I didn't put them on mine and it was super good.

Did you copy it yourself or is there and Outback recipe?? I LOVE that meal at Outback LOL
Reading this thread makes me realize we dont have guests except for thanksgiving/christmas, or your random barbecue on the weekends. So, usually, we hit the grocery store and grill (burgers and brats) or we order pizza or cook it at home (Take and Bake).

The dish itself I just did on my own but I found the honey mustard sauce on Robbie's copycat site and it is just like it. SO good. I used to make it all the time and use it for breaded chicken. Yum!
juni is talking about the alice springs chicken recipe on the copy cat website. it is yum!
we usually do a whole roasted chicken, turkey, lasagna, homemade pizza, or just all appetizers for guests. if it is the summer time we will grill.
Thanks! I had NO clue what it was called - we've only eaten at Outback that one time. I don't use any vegetable oil or seasonings like it listed. I just do the chicken breast coated in a little bit of the honey mustard sauce and then mushrooms on top, a couple slices of bacon on top of that and some cheese. It's super yum.
I like to make stuffed peppers for a large group with mashed potatoes, or fajitas (with additional mexican sides).
For really big groups, I get my dad to whip up some Italian beef (basically, a roast that is sliced thin and served with an au jus gravy on rolls-big thing in Chicago).
I also make a good shredded BBQ pork; I'll serve that with coleslaw, potato salad, fritos. Super casual, but good.
I don't do fancy meals, but those are always big hits.
