Ok I know this was ages ago, but starting in third grade, I would let myself in and stay for a couple hours til my mom got home. By the time I was in fifth grade, it was my brother and I. I think that would be okay. At least in the neighborhood I am in now, with the other kids and parents we know. I guess it would depend on the resources available (phone numbers just in case, etc) and how long, etc.
