For those of you who pack lunches the night before, what do you put in them? The thought of a 12-hour+ old pb&j grosses me out. Really the only other things I put in my kids' lunch boxes are warmed-up food in a thermos--which also wouldn't work the night before. Henry will eat a lunch-meat sandwich or lunchable-type food every once in a while but Mark won't. Mark hates cheese.
I could do pb crackers, chips, and fruit the night before but Mark would get sick of that pretty quickly.
Also, can your kids warm up their lunches? Do they have access to a microwave at school?
Well I used to do night befor PB and J for dh when he worked nights.
I put pb on both sides of the bread and jelly in the middle so the bread didnt get soggy. The I put it in the fridge and it would unthaw or whatever by lunch. He didnt complain.
Now for K shes a snack only so I buy her those prepacked apple/grape bags and put a juice box or water in her lunch box and in the morning toss in a granola bar. I could probably easily do it in the morning but if I forget theres something. i use an ice pack in there so it stays good.

Ditto on the PB on both sides. :hi5
Hannah sometimes likes noodles or coucous, but we always just did pb&js when she had preschool lunches (just one day a week, so it wasn't bad)
Dorian's got me obsessing about bentos, though, and so now Hannah is really wanting to try those.
Are you just wanting to save time of will you not be there in the morning? I often make clara a nutella sandwich, which is close to PB.
I pack the rest of the bag, then put the bag of bread, knife, jar of nutella, and her "sandwich box" on the counter next to it. takes me about 30 seconds to finish the sandwich and throw it in the sack.
how about cold chicken nuggets or pizza? i see they had those in those lunchables boxes at the grocery? would he eat those room-temp if you took them out of the fridge in the morning?
over here our choices are limited because children are not allowed to have anything sweet (no choc, cookies, candies, cakes etc.), no chips or crackers even. basically nothing pre-packaged and only water or milk to drink.
any you know, i am fully supportive of that even tho at times it is a pita!
(and clara knows what she can't take - the teacher will confiscate and throw things away that are bad and replace it with a piece of fruit or something)
We do all sort of sandwiches the night before, and Anna has never complained (she did lunch bunch at preschool some).
But I was going to say the same thing as Megan-you could pack everything but that, you know?
I always do some fruit-grapes are good. Or raisins. I'll sometimes buy the already sliced apple, but slicing it the night before, it gets brown which I don't like. But she will eat a whole apple, so if she requests that, I'll just put the whole thing in.
I also give her a small baggie of goldfish, which can be prepped ahead of time.
Somedays she wants a string cheese.
Of course, we keep the lunch in the fridge (Bill's too), and like Apies, I put a cold pack in.
They do not have access to a microwave, and I don't plan on sending warm lunches.
If I packed Raven's lunch the night before I wouldn't pack her sandwich. I use a sandwich wrap and I don't think the sandwich would hold up well. Raven can't warm up her lunch so if something needs to stay hot I put it in her insulated food cup. Raven will eat most thing cold anyway so that hasn't been a problem.
We don't do PBJ's for the kids but when we do it for ours we do similar to the PB on both sides so it's not soggy. I do PB on one side and then butter (well, I can't believe its not butter light) on the other and then the jelly on top so that it doesn't get all gross.

:puke
Im sorry but the thought of actuall butter or margerine or whatever on a PB and J is disgusting. Is this a regional thing?
As a mom of a child with a nut allergy, I am not afraid to say that I am so thankful that our school is NOT peanut free! The only sandwich Jake will eat for lunch is peanut butter (not even any jelly). I have no idea what he would eat if pb was banned. And yes, I make lunch the night before. Never had any complaints from the kids about soggy sandwiches.

My mom (and her mom) and I have always made pb&j with peanut butter on one slice of bread and butter on the other, then jelly in the middle.
I make Henry's that way but Mark prefers just peanut butter, no "white butter" as he calls it.
LOL at the butter. I HATE butter. My Dad would constantly try to sneak it onto my toast and sandwiches. As if I wouldn't notice.
If our school was PB free, heaven help us. That is Braydon's staple lunch. I'd like to be better at packing the night before, but somehow it never happens. Oh how I love his one day a week of hot lunch!
I've been packing Braxton's lunch the night before also. I just make the sandwich and throw that in the fridge with his juice bottle. then I pack the gold fishes and what ever else I am sending into his lunch box. Then in the moring I just just have to grab his sandwich and juice.
I love the idea of PB on both sides. How did I never think of this.

I'm with you Tracy! I have never, ever heard of putting butter on my PB&J sandwhich!
