With all but two of my kids gone this week I'm starting to remember why I used to look forward to things on my calendar. I can't believe how much free time I have with only 2 kids! And how little work, comparatively, they require. I've actually gotten slightly bored. Not enough to deep clean my house or do my kids' chores myself, though.
i can't believe how early everyone else's kids start school.
i also can't believe how many k programs are full day.
there are 8 elementary schools in my town and each has 3-4 half day k classes...they don't have the staff or space to make all the k kids go full day.
idt connor could handle full day quite yet anyways, so that is fine by me.
Hi all!! Catching up here...
Corey-all of our schools are full day here too. They have had to make a number of changes and do some expansions in order to accomodate that. In fact, Anna will be having K in a brand new wing at her school! (yay, she'll be the first to breathe in the toxic new carpet fumes, lol) The county really pushed for it after parents started pushing about childcare being difficult. I am sure I will get flamed for saying this, but I hate that I feel like my child has to be forced into all day school (and I very much feel all day is too much for most kids at this age) because it is easier logistically for working parents and bus drivers. It feels like what is best for children isn't as important anymore. I'm sure Anna will adjust, and she doesn't nap anymore, but she does rest in the afternoons and I just feel like this is too much too soon. We contemplated private school, but none of them are half day anymore either, plus my neice who did that was WAY behind come 1st grade. And homeschooling would not work for us. She and I wouldn't work well together.
Ugh. This growing up thing is hard. On me, anyway, lol.
Ok, that was WAY too charged a post for my first in the thread for the day-sorry about that.
They don't have rest time????
One of Lucas's required things is a beach towel that they use to lay on everyday. They don't nap but they do have quiet/rest time. I cannot wait to see how this works for Lucas (I do not anticipate it going well)

No flames, just healthy debate. lol. As a working parent, the flip side is that Im pretty peeved about our elem acting like parents have nothing to do all day except drop their kids off and wait for them to be done. Coordinating work and school has been very dificult. Ours is full time, but doesnt start until 9 - which means I get to work at 9:30. School ends at 3:45, but, on Wednesdays at noon. ack.
As for what is best for the kids, that is of course debatable and depends on the kid... It sounds like 1/2 day was not a good choice for your neice?
Robin it sounds like you are having a fun day. I, on the other hand, have done some exciting things like dishes and clean the cat boxes. Try not to be jealous. Seriously, I am impressed with how you can play with your kids. I do once in awhile, but have a hard time doing it for any length of time.
lmao. i think the exact same thing whenever robin posts. i am so not a imaginary play mom. i can do arts n crafts with the best of them and i can set up pretend play scenarios, but i suck at participating.
Add me to this list too! I set them up, but then when they want me to play along with their pretend stuff, I feel the need to run away, lol.
I love crafty things though-that is fun.
My mom and dad are great with the pretend play, which is nice. But they are monsters everytime they come home from my parent's house! IDK what goes on over there, but it is not fun for me when I pick them up...

Nope. Not even a HINT of rest. Now they do more quiet activities in the afternoon, but they have curriculum related content from start to finish.
Did anyone else ever have SSR time at school? Silent Sustained Reading? It was the post lunch silent reading time where the teacher did all her grading and half the kids fell asleep at their desks. I keep trying to encourage Kiera to embrace it at home. Lol.

OMG yesssssssssss. We spent a lot of time doing that on Fridays.

I know it is definitely not easy for working parents to coordinate childcare and school. No question is creates challenges. And I definitely see that, and since the vast majority of 2 parent families have 2 working parents, and more than half of marriages end in divorce, creating a lot more situations where both parents work, most of the parenting population is affected by these things.
But I still don't think it is in the best interest of the 5 year old population on the whole (of course there are exceptions), and I think THEIR needs should come first, hands down, everytime.
As for my neice, the K she attended was like a church preschool type of thing-not really a strong academic setting. And the expectations are so high for kids now that it just didn't meet up with the expectations she had in 1st grade, you know? IDK what it is like in other areas, but around here, with a few very expensive exceptions, private school tend to lag behind public academically and most people use them either for 1) religious reasons or 2) because their home public school has a rough population. And the people who send their kids to the high end puplic schools are in a different segment of the population altogether!!
i'm hanging out for a few, watching price is right.
all 3 of my daytime kiddos are at school today!
emily woke up this morning kicking and screaming "i'm so excited! i go to kindergarten today!"
so freakin cute.
i have a meeting for work at 1 today, so i had this morning to get some work done in peace.
i was hoping to print some target coupons and head over there this morning before my meeting, but it's not looking good since the target coupons are down. dang it.
Yay!!! I'm glad she is so excited. And I know you are going to seriously kick butt today!!!
everything is fine - we did talk about her constipation issues which are chronic. she said we could get an x-ray to check things out a little more closely. she gave us an order. we went to the hospital. we registered. we got called back. kate freaked the eff out and was like hell to the no am I laying on that table! we left without an x-ray.
I'm not too worried. the doc said we need to limit her dairy to 2 servings per day - that would be 1 8 oz glass of milk + 1 serving of yogurt or 2 8 oz glasses of milk. I know she gets more than that in a day. So my plan is to cut out all dairy but 2 servings, up fresh fruit and veggies (which could be hard since the child does not need food to survive apparenty) and go from there.
Ugh. I'm sorry you are still dealing with her constipation issues. And I hope that cutting back on the dairy helps. Is she a dairy-aholic or do you think she will be ok with the cut backs?
I have no idea where the day has gone, I have not gotten anything done. I overslept this morning, and Hannah got up at 10... Starting school next week is going to super suck for us.
I'm concerned that because we live so close to the school that Lucas is going to be the last one picked up in the morning which might affect me getting to work on time.

ITKWYM. Getting used to the new schedule when school starts is going to be rough. My girls don't sleep in that late, but Anna slept until 8:20 this morning (rare for her, but she usually doesn't get up until 7:30-8) and school starts for her at 8:15, so we are going to need to be leaving when she is used to getting up!!
Couple that with a full day with no down time, and this girl is going to be EXHAUSTED. She needs a lot of sleep-she might have to start going to bed earlier than 8pm!

Is there anyway you could drive or walk him to school? Would that help at all? Maybe you could take him a little earlier than the bus would pick him up? IDK what the requirements were, but I know ours schools all have before and after care-not for extended periods, but there were kids who got to school maybe an hour before it started and they were in the gym/cafeteria until the bell rang. (supervised, of course)

If it appears that it's going to be a problem I am going to see how early he can get brought to school. He isn't on a regular bus so that is either gpoing to work for or against me LOL
