Karate lessons?

If you have your '05er in karate lessons, how do they like it?  If you had an older child start them at this age, were you pleased with them?

How much do you spend per lesson?  I know this will vary all over the country, but I have no idea what a ballpark figure would be.

Mason is such a spazz and I'm thinking that karate lessons might help him direct some of his energy.

TIA!!

We are thinking of taking lessons this year. Hannah hasn't taken them before, but I think she needs the energy release, and while she's enjoyed other sports, she seems to thrive on a team of 1, lol. One of Hannah's little GFs does hapkido, and she's crazy amazing to watch (Christina blogged about it here, if you want to see it, lol.) She just turned 5 in June, and has been doing classes for several months... and I really like that they put a lot of effort into working with the parents. I've yet to see a soccer coach ask us how things are going at home, and if there's anything they need to make sure they enforce (obedience, manners, etc.) double-time at class.

Anyways, classes here are $150-250 a quarter.

I looked into it but my husband thinks Dominic is too young and would not follow the directions. It is $20 per week for 3 times a week. I also have to take him because he said they normally don't take them into classes this young, so they would have to meet him to see if they think he would do the classes, which doesn't make sense because I have heard of kids young taking them. I might look into it again when we can afford it.

Leah, Kiera is in TKD also. I checked out that blog, and I second everything she said! Kiera has really taken to it, and dare I say, actually is pretty good at it. She remains remarkably focused and seems to have good balance and to be able to do the kicks, arms and blocks they are taught. They also work with nunchucks, do ninja rolls (somersaults), run backwards and forwards and stuff like that.

Our place (I forget the korean term) does a great job of balancing the discipline and formalities, with the fact that they are 4-6 year olds! Kiera had to "earn" her white belt (she got dressed by herself with me only having to tell her once for a week). Then, she "earned" her first stripe by memorizing the oath ("I promise to be a good person, with knowledge in my mind, honor in my heart, strenght in my body, and to make good friends, and to get my black belt, SIR!") and then her second stripe because she was a good helper or something.

Every belt test requires that they also have "earned" the opportunity to test from their parents. The parents can also fill out "star reports" to allow the tiny tigers to earn stars for their patches. (Kiera got her patches after the intro period, they are not shown here). I really liked that it is set up to teach and reinforce the parents values, but that those values and lessons can be different for each kid/parent.

We pay $100 a month, for as many classes as she wants, but, we go twice a week for 1/2 hour.

OMG Erin, she looks so grown up!  Beautiful!

Thanks so much for the info!  Mason is only going to be in school half-days this year, so I need extra activities for him but don't want to put him in things just to fill time.  It sounds like he could really benefit from karate, and I could benefit from him being in karate, LOL.

Stephen wasn't do any at 5. He did Taekwondo at 7 and then Judo at 11(not exactly sure of his age). Stephen hated Taekwondo but loved Judo. I guess the big difference for him was Taekwondo was about repeating what the instructor did(in a group no contact at first) and Judo was hands on from day one. Judo was a major workout from beginning to end. Not sure what kind Raven will do.

Oh, Alison! Martial Arts is wonderful!

My sisters, brother, and I all did it for a time! There was a kid in my sisters' class that was a total ball of energy and the classes totally helped him learn self-discipline and self control!
I think it would be awesome for Mason! I would look into several different schools and styles for the one that fits Mason the best. I think a lot of schools offer a trial class to see if you and your child like it.

I thought about something for Colin like this to help him redirect that focus! I hope to hear how it goes for Mason!

We've been thinking about signing up Lucas. There is a school just a few minutes from us. I think they run $100 a month. I just worry about it being to much with all day school from 9-3:40.
