hey girls.

i would like to get the kids 2 each of the stainless bottles.  i'm going to use them in emily's school lunch over the summer and they would also be handy for our boat outings (i don't like them having juice boxes b/c i can't dilute the juice).

i saw these on ebay and on amazon and was thinking about ordering them, but i wanted to see if anyone has experience with them?  i really need something that won't leak - the reviews are mixed so i'm not sure if i can trust them.

if you love another stainless steel bottle, please share.  i'd love to stay under $10 each if i can.

thanks!

Apies -

we use SIGG water bottles here and they are AMAzing!  seriously - they get used, thrown, banged up - never had one break. (steel body or plastic tops)

i see in ebay the kids go from about 8-15 bucks.  i know you were wanting under 10 bucks, but considering the durability and quality of these you might want to consider paying a little extra.

the sigg site has kids around 18-22 bucks, some are 12 on sale.  they do have free shipping if you buy 2 or more.

April we have the thermos brand bottles.  You can find them at target and I have seen them at TJ Maxx for less.  We really like them.  I especially like that you can put them on the top rack of the dishwasher and the straw is covered up.

We like the thermos ones ok, but I'm seriously looking at the Sigg ones.

Koda said to me two days ago "mommy I don't want juice boxes anymore.  They garbage the earth and I want to keep it nice and clean".  Adorable.

imo plastic gets junky looking after a few dozen washes in the dishwasher, while i have a few sigg bottles for more than 5 years and they still look like new.

Apies- found this that might better explain:

Also, from my search I learned Sigg is aluminum and there is some concern about the lining and that they have a higher tendency to mold.  Cross that off my shoppin list.

(summary of article: when they replaced BPA, there is some concern about what exactly they replaced it with.  Some fear it is with an equally toxic chemical/plastic)

We have Kleen Kanteen bottles that have been great (I almost couldnt' buy it because of my complete detest of using Ks for Cs and mispellings on purpose but it's been good). I'm pretty sure they use avent sippy tops (or something like that) so they don't leak.

They aren't lined with any plastic.

One thing I found when I switched to metal bottles is the water doesn't get flavoured by the plastic, especially in the sun. I bought a bpa free bottle to leave at my client site and I can now taste the plastic when I drink out of it.

That and all the plastic scary stuff is my main reason for switching.

We have Sigg too and they've been leak free.

I'm also on a mission to find reusable, dishwasher-safe water bottles for my kids' lunchboxes.

I did a search yesterday but I just couldn't figure out what would be best.

They can't look like sippy cups because I don't want the kids to be teased.

They need to be small enough to fit in the kids' lunchboxes but big enough to hold enough drink for their lunches.

They need to be easy enough for the kids to open.

I've been looking at all my regular stores but they don't have anything that looks like it won't spill all over their lunches.

Also, many of the sites I found talk about "leak-free" and/or "spill-proof".

What's the difference?

hi all!!
just a quickie on this topic - i recommend stainless steel over aluminum as well - alum (like sigg) is lighter, but there is question about safety of aluminum (alzheimer's, BPA, etc), while stainless seems to really be problem-free.
also, there are issues with siggs that have a yellow copper color on the inside - these had been recalled by whole foods, etc - so check your siggs. there are lots of articles around to search.
my favorite is foogo by thermos (with the straw) - ours do NOT leak at all, and we've had them for over a year now (i think).  they are a little pricey but well worth it - i bought three originally and have not had to replace them.
kleen kanteen seems great - i dont have them myself but i know PBK is selling them (they're pretty up to date on these issues) and i saw them at whole foods as well.
