birth control options

I'm investigating birth control options and wonder if anyone has experience with the IUD both ParaGuard and Mirena, or the birth control implant Implanon.

I was on the pill for years but want to get away from that. Depending on the brand, they made me hormonal and also dried me out and killed my sex drive.

Thanks in advance for any advice or suggestions.

I have the pargard and am completely happy with it.  Here a relpy to Dorians post a couple of weeks ago!

I love that it doesn't have any hormones!

My sister has the mirena.  She says she's hapy with hers as well.  She said she does get moody sometimes, but not too bad?

I was a crazy person on the pill, so I didn't want to take any chances so I chose no hormones!!

I have had Mirena since August 2005, and I love it. I haven't experienced any adverse side effects, and my period tapered off completely about 2 1/2 years ago. I will be getting it replaced this summer with another Mirena.

I had the Mirena and had some trouble with it.  I had it about 1.5 years since having it removed 1.5 years ago all symptoms have disappeared.   They say the hormones in it do not go systemic but I'm not so sure.

Here is a place to go read some stuff about it

does this mean no babies for the foreseeable future?

thanks everyone. Need to make an appointment with the doctor to discuss with her. Do they insert it on the same visit?

and no babies right now. Have some other stuff to focus on first.

hey slick

wanted to add, that i got my paragard yesterday

i thought it was going to be painful, but it wasn't bad at all. i was uncomfortable for a second, but then it was over. start to finish including the betadine rubdown and everything, it took less than 5 minutes.

for me, i did not get it inserted at the same visit we discussed it. my dr's policy is that you have to order and pay for the device before they'll insert it. lots of insurance companies don't cover them and they don't want to fight that fight for you, so you have to order it. i just paid cash for mine and then am submitting the claim seperately through insurance. it was shipped to my Dr. and they called me when it got there and set up a time to get it inserted.

i got the paragard b/c my body is not able to process hormones with my heart & clotting issues, so hormone free was my only option. i wish i could do mirena just b/c i'd love to stop having periods all together.

good luck with whatever you've got going on. LMK if you have any questions, i'm no expert but am happy to updated as i go on with this thing up in me. (LMAO)

oh, and the paragard lasts 10 years.

we haven't made up our mind about more after my m/c but for now we like the piece of mind this option presents

we can have it removed at any time and go back to making babies if we ever choose to do so.

thanks Dorian. I need to make an appointment with my ob. my insurance said they cover the whole thing, minus copays so it shouldn't be too expensive.

I should look into this! I want something that is hormone free but I don't want to use condoms. I am going to talk to my doc about it. If you don't mind sharing - how much did it cost?
