Tonsils???

I will try to make this brief.  I took E to the doctor almost two weeks ago because despite being on an antibiotic her tonsils were large.  The doctor asked me some questions and thought she might need them out but wasn't comfortable saying that he was 100% sure because she wasn't having sleep apena and I was unsure about the nasal congestion.

Well about a week ago she came down with a stomach virus and ever since then her tonsils have been really huge and even had some little dangle things on it.  (Please excuse my oh so technical description giggle.gif)  She now snores like a freight train at times and does the gasp for breath thing.  She is congested and her eating is pretty poor.

I have a call into the doctor and am waiting for them to call me back, but was wondering if any of you had any experience with this.  My experience was about 19 years ago with my ds, so I know some things have changed.  Does anyone know about how long they wait to do it?  Anything I should ask?  Anything I should know?

Thank you!

Koda has his out at 1.5 which is really really rare, but he had constant ear infections that tubes wasn't helping, and the ENT felt many of his bronchial issues went back to his tonsils.

For us, it was about 4-6 weeks between referral and surgery.  Koda had to spend the night ONLY because he was under 2, normally it is a day surgery.

It was amazing the difference.  She told us after surgery his tonsils were in terrible shape when they came out , and that she was confident we had all made the right choice.  The infection wasn't clearing out of the tonsils, so he was just getting sick repeatedly.

The first night was rough, but I think would be less rough at this age because you can help them understand what is going on.  After that, he was back to normal.

We saw immediate improvements in his health.  While his chart is still listed as possible asthmatic, he hasn't needed a breathing treatment in two years.  Before the surgery he was getting 2-4 per day.

Aww, poor thing!  I don't have any experience with tonsils (except with my own - I was chronically sick and just couldn't get better until they came out when I was 11), but I hope E is feeling better soon!

Lauren had hers out last April, along with her adenoids.  We were referred to an ENT after a CT scan showed blockage of her sinuses and full adenoids.  She had been snoring and having sleep apnea for 9+ months and was only mouth breathing.  Once we saw the ENT the surgery was scheduled in 2 weeks.  It was only a 30 minute procedure and we were able to stay with her in recovery.

Having the tonsils removed was quite painful for her and the doctors told us it would be.  They gave tynelol with codeine for pain and told us to stay on top of it and not miss any doses.  She didn't eat or sleep well for at least 2 weeks.  I think she lost about 5 pounds in that time.

She is doing great now.  No problems with her sinuses, snoring or sleep apnea.

Also, the ENT we saw had his own surgical center so we never went to a hospital.  They didn't put the IV in until she was asleep and she was able to stay in her own clothes.  It made the experience much less scary for her.

I hope E finds some relief soon.  I know it is stressful on you and her.

poor e cry

caroline had her tonsils and adenoids out last year (she was *just* around 5). she had a rough two days but slept a lot because of the tylenol with codeine. after that she was ok and i'd say it took her about 5 days to a week to be totally herself again.

it did make huge improvements in her sleep AND - she used to be a puker, basically she would throw up a LOT. since her surgery she's only thrown up once and it was because she was sick.

poor elizabeth! I know how stressful it can be. andrew had his adnoids out and dental surgery when he was around 3, but like you, it was a long time ago and lots has changed and i don't remember much about it, tbh :bag.

but, i wanted to tell you that don had his tonsils out a couple years ago and it made a huge difference in his sleep apnea (before he was on a cpap (sp?) machine and after the surgery, he didn't need it anymore and he doesn't snore (but I do..lol)

good luck and let us know how it goes.
