So-home improvement! I have one for this!!!

We are doing our siding. It has needed to be done since we moved in, but when we moved in, we had no idea how much it would be. The houses here have vertical siding (not on the front-but the back and sides, since we are an end unit), and it is pricey!!

My neighbors on the other end got quotes for theirs and it was btwn $8-11K. We are not spending that much money. We are either going to replace what we have, which is wood type siding, or do the vertical ourselves. meaning Bill will do it with whoever he can convince to get up there with him. He is getting quotes for the siding prices this week and we will go from there. Bill said he thinks the siding itself will be a few thousand, but he really isn't sure-we want to get it to match the stuff he put on the shed.

We are also going to re-paint the stucco board on the front of the house (our houses have this silly tudor style to them-it really doesn't look that great, but we aren't allowed to change it) and replace the boards that trim out the stucco because the woodpeckers have done a number on them.

So that is first up on the list.

I hope Bill finds some good friends to help him.

Glen is not handy with stuff like that. [Don't tell him I told you.]

Bill got a bonus at work and he asked me what I thought we should spend it on. He wants to put it towards a new motorcycle.

I told him, happy bonus honey, you just bought your wife a stay at the hospital, lol.

I feel bad, but it is what it is!! We have a 10% co-pay and I think our deductible is $2K, so goodbye bonus.

He doesn't need a motorcycle anyway.

I am really costing us a lot of money these days. At least we will have met the deductible so my remicade infusions will be covered-they are very expensive too until the deductible is met.

Hi!

We did story time this morning now just hanging out about to lay Keegan down for nap then myself..ahhh

As far as home improvement. Not much planned. We have a lot of rearranging of sleeping arrangements to do in the upcoming months with this baby coming.

How was story time?

Enjoy your nap!

I have a housefull of boys playing MarioKart right now.

They were jumping on the new trampoline but I guess they got tired.

We have more projects after the siding, but since we have a bird problem, we have to do the siding first. The woodpeckers have put holes along the side of the house and if we don't do something about it soon into the season, we'll end up with a nest in one of the holes.

Anyway, after the siding and front fix up stuff, Bill needs to repair the new steps because they took some wear from salting from the snow-new concrete shouldn't be salted and ours got some salt on them.

Also I need a few more plants for the front garden, but I need to wait and see how my bushes do-they took a pounding with all of the snow we got and I am not sure they will make it. Thankfully the nursery where I bought them will replace them if they die within a year and I just got them this past fall.

That should do it for outside for now.

I am not a fan of woodpeckers.

There's one in my backyard somewhere that like to tap-tap-tap-tap-tap in the mornings or whenever I want to take a nap.

Annoying.

Hi Robin! How are you today?

I am ok-I am not feeling stellar today, but not horrible either. Lots of gas pains today (sorry for the TMI), and this cold I have will not go away-I think the meds keep me from getting over things quickly. So I am resting and hanging out in cyberspace while the girls are in their rooms for their rests too.

I am going to acupuncture tomorrow-she said we'll focus on my cold and trying to get rid of it-that sounds heavenly!

I got a Z-pack from the walk-in clinic the other day, and it is helping my cold significantly.

My throat finally stopped hurting, and now I'm just a little snotty.

I hope you start feeling better asap. Feeling lousy is the pits.

I am glad you are feeling better-the z-pack is one of the few things that works for me and doesn't upset my UC too much.  I am very familiar with it!!

Thank you-having a cold that hangs on just stinks.  I really hope this will be it for the season and we can all get healthy as the weather gets nicer.

It is supposed to be like 60 degrees here by Wednesday-I can hardly wait!!!

After we get the outside done, we are going to do the kitchen. We are going to paint it, refinish the cabinets and *maybe* get new countertops. I am not sure on the last one. Basically the big job is going to be new cabinet doors. Bill wants to build them. SIGH. I wish we could just buy the dumb things!!! We priced it out and to buy them would end up being like $400. Not bad-he just thinks he can do it better-which is probably true, but I would like the kitchen to be done in this century.

We'll see. He has to build a custom cabinet for one of the walls, so he figured he would just do it all-IHNI when he thinks he will do all of this.

He also wants to MAKE concrete countertops. UGH. I mean, I have seen pics of them and I have to be honest, I was really surprised at how nice they look-IF you know what you are doing. Bill does not.

I would like to get new appliances-just a stove and fridge, but Bill doesn't want to. It would probably be more than we want to spend anyway, and he thinks it is silly to do that at this point. We are hoping we can hang onto this place and rent it, and he doesn't think we need new appliances for a rental. We'll see on that-maybe we could find a nice used fridge and stove-IDK. Ours are OLD.

Wow, Bill is REALLY handy. Lucky.

That's sucks to have to spend a bonus that way.  But at least you didn't have to come up with the money without the bonus.

GM, BTW. I've spent my morning working on the list of things I want to get done this week. It's amazing how much I can get done when I don't have to teach my kids. If I work hard I can probably get most of my list done today. I LOVE spring break!

That would be great if you could knock out your list today, then you could just enjoy the rest of the week!

Me too-my dad said he would be happy to help, but Bill and my dad don't work well together.

Most of Bill's brothers are afraid of heights, so that will be a tough one.  We'll see who he can rope into it.

I won't tell.  Glen would probably find all sorts of spiders and such nestled in the siding anyway, so it wouldn't work out well for him.

Honestly, as much as I am glad we can save some money by doing things on our own, I long to have someone just come out and DO it and get it done, kwim?

VERY annoying!!!  Ours is always pecking when it is naptime here too-and he pecks RIGHT by Kate's bed.

I have threatened him and told him I will not hesitate to have roasted woodpecker for dinner if he doesn't cut it out.  But he keeps coming back anyway.

If we do the vinyl siding, that will be the end of him!!!

Okay, now for our home improvement project.

My parents offered to pay for us to have some of the rooms in our house painted, and new carpet installed.

I have issues with getting started on stuff even though I was very happy with the offer.

So finally my dad called to tell me that some people at his church are painting to raise money for missions, and he brought them to our house Saturday to give us an estimate.

The living room, part of the kitchen, and Mark's room will be painted on Wednesday (and maybe Thursday depending how long it takes).

Right now I should be continuing my project of decluttering and moving things away from walls but I wanted a break.

I'm not doing so great on it by just sitting here and playing games.  My excuse is I'm working on lunch (mac & cheese from a box).  The real excuse is I just don't want to clean the bathroom.

Did I mention he has never actually made concrete counters?  And given how our steps look (he poured them), I am not filled with confidence, lol.  The new steps have flaked up quite a bit because they got salted.

But he is good with the woodworking.  Just really slow.  I mean, he has a full time job with a long commute so it isn't like he has a lot of extra time on his hands, kwim?

We are going with simple shaker style doors and we are going to paint them white (I think a small kitchen looks nice with white-and we ar doing pale yellow walls, so I think it will be cheery), so it shouldn't be too hard.  But it is still a lot of work and has to be precise.

Who knows-maybe he will surprise me and bang them out quickly.  (ha ha!!)

The painters will be removing what's left of the teddy bear border in Mark's room.

I know Mark will be thrilled to have his big boy room . . . FINALLY.

And I'll be thrilled to have the main living areas of my house be NOT beige.

I hate beige.

I told my co-teacher Gretchen the other day that my house will finally be at a stage where people will walk in and say, "This is so YOU."

And we've only lived here 16 years.

Ooh!  How nice!  I want to paint my house, but it's beyond me with my stress level at this point.  Maybe this summer.  Or maybe after I get the little things done.

His bonus won't cover the hospital bill, but it definitely helps a lot.  I was fairly anxious about it, actually.  But thankfully we should be ok.  I would still like to do a payment plan though, if they do it interest free-I need to find out once we get the bills.

That sounds great!!!  Paint always changes things up and makes things look new and fresh.  And new carpet will be awesome!!!

We definitely need new carpets, but have decided it isn't worth it to get them yet.  I think that will be one of those things we do when we finally move-get new carpets for the next people.

Yay for your mom and dad-that is awesome of them!!!

I don't want to hear any "I-told-you-so"'s but Henry ALREADY twisted his knee in the new trampoline (which is GINORMOUS btw).

He was the first one to get hurt.

I made him sit and rest his leg for a few hours this morning, then gave him some Motrin, and now he's back to jumping.

Also, his birthday party is this coming Saturday, and I need MANY prayers for no rain.

I'm planning for the trampoline and the rented moonbounce to be the main entertainment so we need NO RAIN.

I think I'll post a separate thread about Henry's party.

I need some ideas.

LOL.  I don't feel as bad now.  We have lived here 7.5 years and are just now getting to a whole lot of things that we have long wanted to do.

I am not big on beige either.  But my bedroom is khaki and I actually really love it.  Nothing else in this house is beige or close to it-except the powder room we are going to re-do.
