Backpack/lunch box advice
Permalink

Im starting to look into backpacks for K for kindergarten and lunchboxes. PBK has three sizes pre-k small and large. Which is best for kindergarten the pre-k size or the small. Id like to fit a folder and maybe some change of clothes in it and perhaps ehr lunch box or to snap the lunch box to the front.

If I remember correctly though there was a convo about a chemical in their lunch bags. Where can you find lunch bags that are cute and dont have that. I would ideally like to monogram both her backpack and lunchbox but if not I can do mabels labels.

Thanks for any insight.

I'm not sure about the chemical free ones but I would definately go with the small size and not the pre-k size.  :)

pre-k is definitely too small - a standard size folder won't even fit there. when i bought emily's the lady at the store told me they get TONS of exchanges on those b/c the teachers tell them they're too small when they get to school.

My advice, go to target, get a backpack and lunchbox there and write her name on it with a sharpee.

They get so trashed, my boys go through 2 each a year.

I wouldn't waste my money at PBK.

Also - check with your school. I just found out our kindergarten doesn't allow backpacks. You pay money and get a little canvas bag. Boo.

I've been hating the amount of waste from packing lunches.  I'm thinking about picking these up next year (yes, pricey, but I've heard good things)

I use a container for Braydon's sandwich.  And then just tupperware things for the rest if there's a need.  I rarely end up using a ziploc.  His lunchbox has a hard plastic liner with a moveable divider, so it works well.

I got Kaylin's backpack for this year at a garage sale for $.25.  It was from Children's Place.  Once I washed it, it was like brand new.  Braydon has a Jansport one and it's held up really well.

The kids have dog tags from Mabel's Label's for their backpacks.

I just bought a three pack of little plastic containers at Walmart that were $1 a pack. They are awesome; I usually use them for: 1) snack (crackers, pretzels, or goldfish) 2) treat (a couple cookies) 3) fruit or veggie.

It has really helped with the lunch packing, and I love not having waste.

I guess my point is you can improvise without having to splurge on a system, lol!

Even better.  I was looking for non-plastic.  Bookmarked this!

ITA. We used an old backpack (for DD in Kindergarten) that we had lying around the house and I'm so glad we did not buy new. It is still holding up, but is so dirty and has taken a beating. She does ride the bus, so I know that contributes to the abuse.

Also, IMO, the bigger, the better. Most days, DD's is packed full. I send so many things to school that I would not have anticipated (books to and from school, cold lunch on occasion, snacks for the whole class on occasion, gloves/hats/snowpants, change of shoes for PE, Valentine box, etc.).
