It's funny. We're on completely the other side of the country so it still feels pretty far away but we did have the torch run and all the media hype.
because this all started for us 7 years ago, many canadians are sick of it. they are wildly beyond their budget and while british columbia will take much of that debt on, some of that will come to the rest of us.
there is also a push for canadians to get gold - we've hosted two olympics in canada before and have never had a gold medal on home turf. the hype over this push has been a bit out of control. so now all our media talk about is when the first gold will happen and if it doesn't happen there will be endless conversation about how much money was spent and why didn't we win any gold medals.
the luger's death put a huge sadness over the games, of course. our media showed it in complete detail (very unlike canadian media generally) and that has disgusted most people. they showed it as the very first thing on the night of the opening. it was hard to want to watch the rest of the coverage after that.
more than you wanted to know about how one canadian sees things? ;)
