I wish I had a picture of the front of my house (when it wasn't covered in snow, anyways lol) but I am thinking about taking down the shutters and repainting. Our house is a pale khaki (almost yellow), and right now the shutters are boring Math Professor Khaki Pants brown. It's ugly, and even if it wasn't, it's a snooze fest. Or front door is currently white.
A few years ago, our front light went out, and I took the pieces off that could have hurt someone, and we just never got around to replacing it. So, I am getting a light for out there, and would like to replace our house numbers eventually since they are a very yucky bronze.
We are thinking about getting ready to sell once the market turns, but even if we don't, I'm sick of wearing my hatred for this place on my sleeve, and I need some serious curb appeal.
What do you guys think about black shutters? Too harsh? A nice pop?
If it helps to kinda of *get* my style, I like classic stuff, but I love a great pop of color, so these are my front runners for the replacements.
I love the light, and the first set of numbers. Boring and overly practical Jenn thinks the second set of numbers might be hard to read from the road in the evening for emergency vehicles (or you know, dinner guests which is probably what normal people would have thought of...not whether a fire truck can see it. Sorry, I have a worst case scenario disorder).
I also think the middle picture would have more curb appeal and be attractive to a larger variety of home hunters.
ps- to your actual question... I like black shutters, plarticularly with the accents you are thinking.
Yes you can totally do black shutters. I like the numbers and light you picked out too. I don't know what other trim work (porch rails, etc.) you might have but here is a suggestion.
If you do the shutters in black I would take a color from the colors in the number (although I might go with a number background more reddish) and paint the front door that color. If you found a greenish background for the numbers you could do a green door. I hope that makes sense. It becomes less boring but it's nothing drastic and I like the bolder door because it's kind of like saying here's the door to HOME.
Ooooh, I love that, April. It makes me wish we had gray siding!
Yes, our windows are trimmed in white - and we have pannelled windows (like in April's picture) so there's a lot of white trimming. We don't have banisters or porch beams or anything like that. It's just a drab ol' condo, lol. And with so many on this street (1/2 of which are brick) I really want something that sticks out.
I'm getting really excited. My BIL is also coming up to rip out so bushes this year. We have a huge lilac bush that I adore, but it's tearing up the sidewalk because it's planted so closely, and bees are always hitting you in the face when you are walking into the house. Not too awesome. And we still can't get rid of the dayum ivy, so Idk what we are going to do about that. But it should be inexpensive changes that have a lot of wow factor, I'm hoping!
We have a beige house, black shutters, black front door, and black numbers. I think black shutters are the same as a black dress- classic, match everything, and never go out of style.
