that people can come up with the spelling that they do for names

I was on the phone with a parent from another school today. He said his son's name was Graham. He begins to spell it for me and they spell it Graeme?????????

Have you ever seen such a thing?

Actually I have seen it spelled that way but I prefer the way you thought it should be spelled.

There is a baby in my Mother's Day Out class named Hayllie--yes, with an extra "L". ??

Whatever.

wow, surprised people have seen the name spelled that way. I have never once in my entire life seen it spelled that way. I see a lot of kids and names and that is not one of them.

I feel better. It is very uncommon

A lot of parents change the spelling because of their nationality.

I have a friend who's kids are Ciera (pronounced Sierra) and Aedan. They are Irish, and those are the Gaelic spellings.

As much as I love how they stick to their heritage, poor kids are going to have to spell their names out for people for ever.

Two people I know just had/are having Makennas. One is Makenna the other is Mykenna. The second? The poor kid'll be my-kenna her whole life.

The Graham/Graeme is sort of like Jeffrey/Geofrey, right?

Toni, I was thinking the same thing.  Gaelic names are notorious for sounding completely differently than they are spelled in English.  Take Siobhan, for instance.  There is just no way a person can look at that name, without ever encountering it before, and think "She-VONNE."  They tend to be really beautiful names, but yeah, it would be a real drag correcting everyone---I'm a K-O-R-I, so I know what it is like to have to spell my name out over, and over, and over, and over...:)

I wonder if the other Graham spelling is Gaelic??

that said, i think americans tend to fuck up a lot of name spellings in an attempt to be different but what they do is give a headache to their poor child who is stuck always having to spell out the crazy spelled name.  i think i would hate my parents if they did that to me.
