lasik update.

i'm not doing it. not for now, anyway. the more i read, the more i see that, while everyone ends up seeing, people end up in reading glasses way earlier, something crazy like 56% end up with dry eyes (to an unmanageable extent), halos, double vision, or starbursts....and a high percentage still need glasses in some capacity (night vision, far distance, etc) - it soudns sort of like a nightmare.  i'm not willing to sacrifice my eyesight further.

meanwhile my papillary conjunctivitis is STILL not clear, a full year later of not wearing contacts and three rounds of steroid drops.  the doctor said that he doubts very much that i'll ever be able to wear contacts more than 6 hours a week.  he said we can try weaning back on, but no more than 2 hours a day, 2x a week, etc...
right now that doesnt even seem worth the cost of a new contact fitting and supply, so i've stalled.  i'll do the contact fitting sometime in the spring - we'll see.  i honestly dont even gaf at this point.

i'm getting new glasses in a few weeks - after a year in these, i'm ready for a change.  i'm actually trying to just view it as a new accessory - maybe i can be one of those super hip types with a thousand pairs of glasses, like whats-her-name in copycat.

i have to just go with it. i have nice eyes - it's the one feature i've always really liked about my face, and i hate that glasses are permanent - but i guess it's time to just move on and accept it. i'll post pics when i get a new pair :)

Sorry you cannot get it, but it is the best decision for you. Glasses rock - I have been wearing mine more and more. Contacts have been really bothering me at work and with all my allergy issues I have had to wear glasses. My eyes were getting all swollen and itchy.

It's ironic you posted this.  I just went for my consultation today and I'm scheduled for surgery next Tuesday.  I'm so freaking excited!!

There are at least 10 people in my office that have had it done and I have probably another dozen friends/acqaintances that have had it done.  They have all told me it's nothing short of a miracle and don't have any of the side effects you mentioned.

If I didn't have so many first had good experiences with it and read what you did, I probably would have opted not to do it as well.

As you wrote, they did tell me I would need readers and I'm approaching the age it will start.  I was going to need them anyway though.  I'm just happy I won't have to correct my nearsightedness anymore.

I'll definitely give an update here!  I was lucky to get in so soon.  They just so happened to have a cancellation for next Tuesday and since I hadn't worn my contact at all yesterday, I was able to get in the full week without contacts that I need before surgery.

I do know that there is new technology out there and apparently the place I'm going to uses a piece of equipment that there are only 8 machines in the US.  I was told yesterday that in the past there could have been problems with halos and such as you mentioned, but with the newer technology it is no longer a cause for concern.

I'm guessing that more than just checking out the procedure itself online someone interested in this would want to check out how a particular doctor operates and what kind of statistics they have, what is their exact procedure, etc.

Now I'm just trying to get through the week wearing my glasses.  I'm getting horrible headaches from it since I'm not used to wearing them all the time.

Chickie-good luck!!! That is awesome!!!!

Kelly-I am sorry you are stuck with glasses. FWIW, my dad had it done years and years ago, and while yes, he still always needed reading glasses, he has never had any of the other issues you mentioned. He was right at the cutoff for being too blind to have it done, lol, but it has been LIFE CHANGING for him. I took him when he had it done (he asked me if I wanted to watch-um...NO), and as soon as he took off the patches, he was just giddy.

But my dad already needed reading glasses before he had it done-so that wasn't new for him.

Take a pic when you get new glasses!

yes definitely - i had a consultation this past month, but i had to cancel it because i had no one to watch the kids.  the problems i was reading about were how they measure "success" -- so it was more about the stats being flawed.  seriously though i hadnt heard about new equipment and whatnot - i cant wait to hear about how yorus goes - PLEASE update!!

Kelly,

It's too bad but I am happy to hear that you're happy with your decision.  You sound like my DH - he thought that I was crazy when I decided to go with LASIK and he said that he would never do it if he was me.  It has worked out well with me though.  I don't have dry eyes or any of the symptoms that you described and it has been almost  3 1/2 years now...  Contacts were giving me super dry eyes and irritating my eyes and I was sick of wearing glasses so that's what drove me to the decision really.  There is nothing wrong with the glasses though, I think they look so good on some people.

And Chickie, I can't wait to hear about how it goes. I was in disbelief for a good few weeks about not needing glasses, it was like a miracle :))))
