My biggest concern with tile (aside from being cold), was the issue of cracking.
Danielle dropped a jar of jelly on our kitchen floor, and one of the tiles got a crack in it. Over time it kind of developed into this spiderweb like crack, and we had to replace the tile.
Also, I hate cleaning grout, and the grout in our kitchen was always getting stained (from spilled sauce, and even wet dog food stained it). Super annoying. It's possible to get it clean, but was never a fun task.
That said, I hate linoleum, and I'm with April on the wood floors (those things get trashed!)
i'm TOTALLY with you on teh grout - that's my biggest issue with our tile. the grout is thick, and i seriously just never clean it bc i'd like it to just gray-out and match the tiles so it will be less obvious (even though it's DIRTY). i cant stand when red sauce gets in there. nightmare. grout was the big reason we redid the counters. we had tile, and the grout was disGUSTING.
I do like it, but not sure if that's what I would choose if it needed replaced.
The previous owners had dogs, and if you look closely it is terribly scratched everywhere. Since we moved in 2 years ago, we have put several gouges in it from dropped bar stools, and it's looking rough (it's about 5 years old).
This sounds weird but I do not like that I cannot "sanitize" it, although I've heard that vinegar (which is what I use) is a natural sanitizer.
My parents just had their hardwoods refinished (their floors are about 10 years old) and it looks gorgeous again. They paid about $1200 for the kitchen/entry/hallway.
In another house we owned, we put in wood laminate and it looked beautiful and was easy maintainance but scratched VERY easily and I was not happy with that aspect considering it was expensive.
In our last house, we had a really thick laminate floor (cannot recall the type) with a large square type design. Our guests often thought it was tile. Held up beautifully and I loved it!! If you are interested, I could try to find out what it was.
We have ceramic tile. I use vineger to clean it. The grout almost matches the color of some of our tiles. They have a natural stone look with a bunch of colors in it. I love it. Due to the colors in it you can't really tell when it is dirty. So far I have lost a cereal bowl, cup and plate on it.
