Anyone see it? What did ya think? It is available on Amazon right now for 9.99 for Oprah people. You have to get a code I believe from her web page maybe. It is very interesting. You get a free download with buying it.

Did anyone catch the  topic on Oprah today on it? It touched on this and where our food comes from.

I have been really researching food as of late with my new found allergy issues. I already have gone mostly organic and now think I am going to do strictly grass fed beef and chicken. I am cutting down on meat too.

I am floored at the amount of antibiotics used in the meat industry.

For all you Chipolte lovers. They are totally grass fed meats used there and all things are fresh besides the corn. Great company to support!

I actually just finished watching that Oprah. With Kaylin's new diet it may be time for all of us to change our habits. I don't think we eat too terribly, but I have noticed now that I can't just grab, say a potato mix or the like, my cooking habits and what I need to have on hand are already changing. We do already eat only grass fed beef that we buy in bulk. I'll have to look into chicken and pork.

My problem is that after visiting Whole Foods, I really don't see how I could ever really afford to shop 100% there. Ouch!

trader joe's is a great alternative to wholefoods. i never go to wholefoods - too expensive.
i havent seen food inc. but i want to.
king corn completely revolutionized my approach to food - these movies can be very powerful.

melissa on another note, i got method detergent - it smells great but a little pricey for all the time. i picked up TJs detergent which is free of harsh chemicals -and only $4 for 26 loads. i think i'll alternate between this and method.

have you heard of Dr. Bronner's? looks like a fantastic company:
http://www.drbronner.com/index.html
my babysitter uses all of this stuff exclusively, as does her sister.
i havent bought anything bc i think i have all bases covered at this point, but might be fun to try some of this at some point.

my next task is new cookware - LOL.

Is the meat at Trader Joe grass fed?

I have no clue what cookware is considered safe and good? Do you?

I will check out that Dr. Bronner's. I have never heard the name before.

Funny you mentione the TJ laundry soap. I was going to just ask if you have used it. Do you like it and does it clean well?

i'll let u know about the detergent. i did a load yesterday but it's still sitting in the dryer :bag

the beef at TJs is "vegetarian fed" which prob means corn. i had planned to ask them if they sell strictly grass fed yesterday when i was there, but my kids were nightmares there yesterday.

cookware - teflon is an issue, and i'm hearing that non-stick is an issue altogether, so stainless steel or cast iron is the way to go. i dont have any pans that are flaking right now, so i'm not feeling a major urgency, and i already use stainless steel pots. next time i see a good deal at BB&B, i'll pick up a new frying pan. i cant throw down hundreds on new cookware right now.

i was lmao the other day while doing yoga - i was like "this mat must be totally carcinogenic" (relaxing, right?!) - did a quick search, and sure enoguh, sticky yoga mats are loaded with PVCs & pthalates - ARGH~!!!  i'm not gonna worry about it bc i cant get started on teh shower curtain thing and all of that, but i guess i might be replacing that mat down the road...

You are too funny. I think we can only do so much and so far it sounds like you are doing all the right things. Let me know how the soap works. I was going to get it, but I really hate dingy laundry. I know that is bad, but with the girls I just need something that works.

I just found a farm here that I can order my meat through. I am going to price it out and see if this is something we can do. I really like the idea of supporting local too and also knowing that they are not injected with all the antibiotics and that.

It was crazy to see what they do to chickens to make the breast bigger. It never use to be like that. I want to go back to food before we tried to make it bigger and cheaper. I am willing to spend a bit more now on food in hopes down the road it will pay off for us medically.

I wished the gov. would subsidizing  farmers and start changing the way the US eats. Maybe people will watch this documentary and start to think about it and this generation can take action on getting us healthy.

yeah that's a good idea, a local farm.
the TJs beef does not say organic on it. it's probably not ideal.
i should research a local option.
just dragged my laundry up (thanks for the incentive) - the bottoms of the socks look good, a shirt covered with yogurt looks perfectly clean...
meets my standards - lol.
the fragrance (lavendar oil) is VERY faint, which is fine with me, but if you like your clothes fragranced, this isnt for you.
it's worth a try for $4.45 anyway.  it could save you in teh longrun if you like it.

also, are you buying your chicken at TJs? it seems good - organic, no antibiotics, etc.  i've been using it for a long time now.

I have not purchased my meat there always. I do buy amish chicken also and love it. I am going to look at the meat closer when I go.

I am going to cut down on meat period, but I want to at least try to have decent stuff of what I am eating.

yeah i'm cutting down too. i dont eat a ton to begin with, but i think i could totally eliminate it without missing it.  i eat a bite here and there from what the kids eat (they have steak once a week) and i'll have a burger maybe once every 2-3 mos. so really it's not a lot. but i dont need it.

I haven't seen it, but I just ordered it, lol!

I have just recently started thinking that I should be concerned about meat. Not beef particularly since we get the vast majority of what we eat from my ILs (and they only use antibiotics if they have to-they aren't grass fed exclusively, but that is the majority of their diet), but chicken for sure. I know that antibiotics for ME set of my UC BIG TIME. I mean, it was antibiotic use that triggered this in the first place!!! I hate to fork over the money for organic, I really truly so, but at the same time, I think it might be worth it-IDK.

I will not shop at Whole Paycheck, I mean...Whole Foods. They are so overpriced it is not even funny. I honestly do not like that store at all-highway robbery taking place there. But I will start heading to TJs more and see what they have.

So yes, the cookware thing too-there was a segment about this stuff on Dr. Oz recently. Nonstick pans should not be heated without anything in them, and they should never be overheated. They are fine for quick things that won't be in the pan for too long, but not for much more. There was a guy on there who said that a non stick pan, even one that isn't chipped or cracked, when heated on its own to high temps gives off enough fumes to kill a canary if you had one living in your kitchen. We try not to use them much aside from eggs.

Also though-granite counter tops can emit high levels of radon. They don't all, but if you have granite, you should have it tested because some emit high enough levels of radon to be cancer causing. Yikes. Maybe Bill's idea of concrete countertops isn't so bad after all...

i had my countertop tested for radon just before christmas.  we're in the clear - but it's definitely something to watch for and have tested. he put the tester right on top of the counter.  it tested at less than .5 which is great. PHEW.

itu that organic is a lot of money (but really it hasnt translated into a big increase in spending for me for some reason) -- but when you think about it, it's a great thing to support. the more organic foods consumers buy, the less demand there is for the over-processed stuff.  if EVERYONE got on board, organic prices would come down and prices for overprocessed stuff would go up, and then the country would be making MUCH better health choices.

Laura, what about finding a local farmer that you can get your meat from? I found a few around me that you can order from and I am going to look into that. To me I am willing to pay a little more for a better product that does not have the antibiotics in it and that is fed on what it was suppose to feed on.Not grown at warp speed to make a bigger and better breast of chicken.

Can ya tell the movie bothered me,lol.

That is probably an option.  I could try to get my FIL to start getting chicken again, but they don't have much luck.  They tend to do it for the eggs, but then foxes almost always get in and kill the chickens.  I need to search around for options because this has been on my mind lately and this is BEFORE watching the movie!!!

That is great!  Can you imagine how awful it would be to have expensive new countertops and find out that they aren't safe???

PHEW.

That is great!  Can you imagine how awful it would be to have expensive new countertops and find out that they aren't safe???

if we had to tear these new counters up, i dont think my marriage could have survived it.

OMG, that is exactly what I think too when I think about people installing them and then finding out they were not safe.  (though I am not sure how many people are even testing, tbh.  It is awesome that you did!!!)

I wonder if all natural stone counters are a hazard?  IDK, but it would seem to me most would pose a risk.

well that's exactly the thing - ANY stone emits a certain amount of radon.  with the granites, it seemed to be mainly the cream colored ones, and the red ones, and only certain manufacturers (or something).  there are certain kinds that are "higher risk," which i looked into before purchasing this counter, and they werent colors i wanted anyway.
the radon guy said that any stone in the house could be a problem - like if my kitchen tested high, maybe the floor could have been the problem, kwim? i'm glad the whole thing just came back fine.
so basically, all natural stone emits radon, but low levels are totally fine and unavoidable.
i was particularly concerned with my rock foundation - that came back fine too.  that would have sucked bc there's not much you can do, except install this whole vent system, which is a TOTAL production bc you cant even vent out into the yard bc of soil concerns, etc.
NIGHTMARE.
i totally dodged that bullet.

i need to go buy a brita.  i'm way behind on the water supply stuff.

That makes sense, and it what I figured.  They tested one lady's counter on Dr. Oz and said hers was lower than just being outside, so it was obviously no risk there.  I think it was a darker color.

Thank GOD about your foundation!  I can't even imagine how stressful it would be to deal with venting for that!!!!

Are you going to do the pitchers or the thing that goes on your water tap?  We have the pitchers-Bill doesn't like the tap filters.

yeah i dont want to do a tap filter either. so just the pitchers. i have to look into it (and subsequently become paralyzed by too much information and go to bed convinced we're all going to die) because i've heard britas dont really filter all that much.  but who knows.
