sorry for the t/j, Michele.

I was just reading that most cars LATCH system is only good to 40lbs? That after that you have to use the seatbelt? Is this true?

Ugh. seriously? The one we have doesn't have anything but latch. ay yi yi. Too much to think about now.

I have read this as well.  If your child is 40lbs or more and you were using lower anchors (on newer cars), you should switch to using the seat belt restraint, since the seat belt is made to hold in an adult and is thus stronger.

But I read that if you use tether anchors, the same is not necessarily true.

As a general rule though, yes, after 40lbs, you should stop using latch.  It really isn' that tough to install them with the seat belt though-I thought it would be horrid, but it wasn't too bad.

Michele, we have the Regent, though I just got a Graco Turbobooster for Anna (she is 46" and 43lbs-Target has them for $45 and you get a $20 GC with the purchase).  It is big and heavy, but very stable and secure.  I would prefer the Frontier now, but since we have the Regent, we are keeping it. (Kate is using it now)  IDK how the install differs from the Regent to the Frontier, but I didn't find it to be too tough using the seat belt.  I'd go with the Frontier.

I got Jake a Frontier last month.  I took him to BRU and sat him in the Graco Nautilus and the Frontier.  The Nautilus crotch strap was under him.  I like that on the Frontier he has plenty of crotch room so I can continue to harness him.

It always takes me forever to install a carseat - I want them to be in there with zero wiggle room.  It makes it a little harder for me b/c I have Kate in the middle of my backseat with a Britax Boulevard so I'm putting the Frontier next to it and I can't even hardly get my hand b/w them to fast the belt.

The Frontier is big.  It's heavy.  But I read somewhere - what do you expect with a seat that you want to protect a preschooler who weighs 40-60 pounds?

I've been a fan of Britax having 2 boulevards and a Marathon (I think - not sure what Kate has in John's truck).  I love the Frontier and will get one for Kate when she's ready to move up.

I HAAAAAAAATE that about the Nautilus.  And frankly, I don't understand it.  Mason is pretty little, and the crotch strap is still practically under him.  And I feel like the chest clip is too loose - he can move it up and down while he's sitting in the seat.

But he's probably around 37 pounds, so I'm going to wait a while to put him in the high-back booster that we already have.  It doesn't have a harness, and he's just too little for me to feel safe with it.

I really wanted to put him back in the Britax Marathon and get a new convertible for Evelyn, but can't justify spending the money when the seats we have are safe.

I have the Nautilus and not sure what you guys keep talking about. The clip comes up and clips in just fine. I mean you have to make sure it is not under them when they sit, but it goes right over. Is it because it goes over crotch.

My chest clip does not move either? I was just wondering since I have had it for a year now and had no issue.

We have the nautilus for Mr. B and love it. I don't see the crotch issue but maybe once he's bigger? He is just about 25 pounds now.

Allie is the one using it and she is like 42lbs or something and no issue. She just moves it forward before she sits and it clips just fine.

Supa - what is the tether thing vs. latch? I should know this, right? I cannot believe I never knew that with the LATCH. Do you use the seatbelt then?

Michele, are you wanting a booster or 5 pt for Lauren?

I think the Clek Oober is just a booster.

I would go with a Britax Frontier. I have heard they can be a bit hard to install. Is it is seat you would move very often? Also the Frontier has an expiration of 9 years which is nice since most are only 6 years.

Britax will have a sell here soon they always do in Feb and Sept.

I don't know how I missed that - I thought the Clek was a 5pt.  Well I guess that is out.  I really want a 5pt for her.

This is really helpful Kris.  Thanks.  You don't think the material is cheap and flimsy for the price?  I read a review that said that.

It would be so helpful if I had a store around me that I could just go look at these.  Everything is an hour drive away.

Michele, if I were you I would make a fun day of it and go out to lunch and check out the seats. This way Lauren can sit in them. I think that way it saves you guessing.

 OMG - really??

I never knew buying a carseat was going to give me this much headache!  Glad I am finding out now.

I'll be honest, we have never used tether anchors, in fact I haven't ever looked for them in my car!!!

They are anchors at the top-here is a link that explains better than I could.

http://www.car-safety.org/latch.html

We were using the seat belt, yes.  It is actually very secure, and not that tough to install in my car.  Kate though, is 33lbs, so I installed the seat with the lower latch anchors on her side, and Anna is in the turbobooster instead of a 5 point harness seat. (which I am very mixed about, tbh)

Ok, I get it with the tether. I mean the tether alone is not used, but with the LATCH or the seatbelt.

I guess I need to use the seatbelt now to secure her carseat.

That is true most Latch is only good until 40 or 48 lbs.  You have to read your user guide on your vehicle.  Some will go higher.

But a seatbelt install is no big deal!  Owen's is installed with a seatbelt because in the Odyssey there is only one latch anchor in the back row and that is in the middle.

You can still tether though and should.

Okay, so for those in the know (coughsaracough) now I need two new boosters that harness past 40 pounds.

I would love one that is not super wide and could potentially fit into my backseat with three carseats total (don't get any ideas). But I'm also on a budget. Any thoughts?

They are a bit on the pricey side but if you can watch for a sale the Sunshine Kids Radian are a good narrow seat and get great reviews.

Shut up! I was *just* coming on here to ask if you knew about these and if they were any good. They even fold up! So glad you posted this. I will keep an eye out for a sale though because I do NOT want to pay 200 bucks - but I love that you can use it rear facing too!

It is just crazy because I never thought of this or heard anyone say this before. I will have to check my manual and see. I am sure she is right around the limit though.

and being that your boys aren't overly large you would be totally fine getting away with the 65 lbs ones vs the one that goes to 80 lbs.

Also a good time is diapers.com will also price match and if you are a new customer will give you another 10% off.  so if you have ordered before give them another email and an address of a nearby relative or friend if you can.

yeah, we definitely do not need the 80 pound for Gavin (and most likely not for Owen though he is a big boy now.) I haven't used diapers.com, thanks for the tip. It will be a while because it is still kind of pricey but it's good to know there are some good options just in case we do go for a third!

We're using Britax Monarch for Christopher and he is 45" and 47lbs.

(this booster seat is for 30 - 100lbs and 38 - 60inches so it should last him for a while)

Irinia, when and where did you get this?  I don't see it on the Britax site.

It's a non harnessed seat, Michele. and they discontinued them in 2008.

yes, we use car seat belts to buckle up since Christopher is over 40lbs.  I didn't know that they were discontinued... wonder shy?  we've been so happy with it.  I still see them on many websites but they're out of stock.
Here for example:

Here are the reviews, it used to be the best booster seat when I bought it:
