Do you think I made a faux pas?

(probably spelled that wrong..lol)

but I have been thinking of this nonstop.  Last Thurs while picking ivy up from preschool, I stopped another mom and mentioned how much I loved her hair and was wondering who was her stylist, etc.  I said that I was looking for a very similar style and loved hers.  She looked at me kinda strange and then said "it's a wig" that she had hair loss and doesn't usually tell people that.  but, do you think she was offended?

I don't think you made a faux pas at all! It may have made her feel a little uncomfortable to tell you she was wearing a wig, BUT, I'm sure she took it as a compliment. It probably made her feel good that you thought it was her natural hair and that it looked nice!

I wouldn't think she would be offended.

And if she was, it was probably due to hypersensitivity surrounding her hair loss. But that's not your fault... you shouldn't feel badly about giving someone a compliment. :)

How the heck were you suppose to know.

I wouldn't worry about it.

If anything she was probably embarrassed because she had to explain why she was wearing a wig. (not that she had to I guess, but that she did.) I think in retrospect she would be happy knowing that he wig looks real enough for someone to compliment like you did. You didn't do anything wrong. But I know I would be thinking about it for a while too like you have. Maybe it will alleviate any worries she has about the wig being obvious.

oh i dont think you made a faux pas at ALL!
i bet she was embarrassed that she's having hair loss, and was taken off guard.
she's probably psyched to have gotten a compliment!

Don is right. She never had to tell you it was a wig. It may have been awkward moment, but I would not worry about it in the least. I would have just said to her after she told me it was a wig that it is a great one  :)

Don is absolutely right! You did nothing and said nothing wrong.

i would bet money she was not offended at all. i think her strange look was more of her deciding whether or not to tell you the truth or not than being upset.

my mother has alopecia and has worn a wig for a long time. my parents spend $$$$ so she can have a very nice natural looking one and you totally can't tell it isn't her real hair. all the same, i think she wonders some time if people know and i think she would be thrilled if someone complimented her in the way you (unknowingly) did.
