Urinating at night :(
Permalink

I am wondering if anyone has ever run into anything like this before.  I am so so so worried about Meghan right now, mostly because I have NO IDEA what is going on.

It started on Wednesday morning. She woke up at about 6:15am and went to the bathroom to pee.  She ran in again maybe 5 minutes later and peed a tiny bit.  Did it again 5 minutes later but nothing came out.

Thursday night, she woke up at about 2:45 and went the bathroom.  Then she did the same thing until after 4.  Every 10 minutes or so, running to the bathroom to pee but nothing would come out.  She was in tears because she was so tired but said she felt like "she had to pee a lot any minute".

Friday night, from 5-6, same thing.

Last night, started at 1 then after 5 times of getting up, at 1:30,  I went in to sleep with her, hoping my being there would distract her from thinking about going to the bathroom, and she did fall asleep soon after and slept until just after 7.  She did urinate when she woke up and the went in 5 minutes later to pee a tiny bit again.

She has no pain when she pees, no fever and this does not happen during the day.  She is not excessively thirsty or more hungry than usual during the day.

One thing I have noticed over the last few weeks is that she has not been drinking enough.  I keep trying to make it a priority to make sure she always had a drink on hand, but I've been slacking. :bag:

No bubble baths lately, BUT she did get a ton of bath toys for Christmas (bath colors<which we have been using for years>, a very large pirate ship, pirate and knight figurines and a Little Mermaid doll).  I didn't wash these before putting them in the bath.

She usually sleeps through the night without waking to pee.  Sometimes she'll call us to fix her blanket or something but goes right back to sleep afterwards.   She also doesn't usually have to pee as soon as she wakes up.  She usually does as part of our routine, but normally doesn't wake up and run into the bathroom.

I took her to the pedi on Friday and she said externally, she looked fine.   We went for a urinalysis and everything came back negative.   We are waiting for the results from the urine culture but the pedi said if they didn't find anything in the initial analysis, they most likey won't find anything when they culture it.

I'll call the pedi again tomorrow to see what we should do next but I just feel so awful not being able to help her NOW.  She is so miserable when she wakes up and just wants to be able to fall back asleep (which is why I don't think she's doing it for night time attention).

Does anyone have any idea what could be going on?

Ask if the ped. if they checked her blood sugar.

Try pumping her with fluids and see if it improves. Is this just at night she does this? Not during the day? Maybe she is having dreams or something that she thinks she is peeing or has to?

If it was something medical I would think that it would occur during the day. However, I am no Dr.

Do you think it could be anxiety or something like that? I have no idea! It must be so frustrating for both of you though. **hugs**

I made sure they checked her urine for sugar and that was negative.   I think we'll end up going for a fasting glucose next week just in case, but it sounds like if it were diabetes, other symptoms would be present (there would be urine present when she feels the need to go, increased thirst, fatigue, etc).  I'm, of course, praying that we will be able to cross that one off the list.

I've thought about dreams and anxiety, but it's not a problem of her waking up often.  It's more that once she's awake, she can't fall back asleep because she feels the need to urinate constantly.  I am definitely not ruling out a behavioral (rather than physical) issue though.

(((HUGS))) Di. It is so worrisome when they have these kinds of problems that you just can't quite figure out.

I really don't have any ideas, but I can say Anna wakes up most every night to pee-sometimes more than once. And she has had dreams about peeing-once she even wet the bed (she was mortified) because she had a dream where she had to pee. It wasn't even like she soaked th bed or anything-she just peed a little.

And I know for me, sometimes I feel the exact same way-I will wake up, then it seems like I have to pee 10 times before I finally feel like I can go back to sleep-and hardly anything will come out. I have been like that as long as I can remember. It isn't all the time, just some of the time-often when I have a lot on my mind and I can't settle back into sleep easily.

Keep us posted, and I am sorry I don't have more constructive to say on the subject.

It's good that you're taking her in and trying to rule things out. My gut says that maybe it is related to the baby coming pretty soon and her being nervous or something related to that. I don't know though. Keep us posted!

i'm glad you took her in, but i'm thinking it might be stress or the inability to go back to bed or whatever.
R has been waking to pee a lot lately too. 1-2x a night.  sometimes she doesnt quite wake up all the way and she gets really stressed out (ie, she's asleep and knows to go to the BR, but will cry about it for wahtever reason.  other times, she's fully awake and is NOT stressed in that case).
i also think that R doesnt let all of the pee out. she's always in such a rush to get back to bed.
the need to pee does sound like a bladder infx, though she doesnt have teh other symptoms - i wonder if it would be a good idea to just give her some cranberry juice in case? (isnt that what you use for bladder infx?) - my sister used to hhave them ALL THE TIME at this age...just a thought.

(((hugs)))

Can you try giving her cranberry juice for a few days and see if that helps?

Thank you for all of the advice ladies!

I'm definitely keeping "baby is coming" stress in mind.  I have no idea how to prove that as a cause or fix it, so I'm just going to try harder to make sure she is comfortable with the changes coming (as much as I can, I guess).

I have been giving her cranberry juice since Friday afternoon and hoping that ends up helping.  On Friday, it was just the Tropicana kind I couild grab from the local Quick Check on the way home.  I grabbed a jar of the organic kind yesterday but it is still diluted and I dilute it even more with apple juice and water.  I don't want to scare her away from it by giving it to her straight or with the concentrated health food store varieties.

We just put her down to sleep so I'm just praying it goes away by itself and we'll all wake up in the morning and be able to put this behind us.  She said to me tonight, "It's strange that when you are here, I don't feel like I have to go pee pee so much.  When you aren't, I have to keep going".  From an outsider's perspective, I would think it sounds like she wants attention at night.  But I kind of think it's more that my being there is a distraction for her and she's not laying in bed thinking "Do I have to go pee?  I hope I don't have to pee again.  Oh, it feels like there's some pee.  I don't want to pee in my pants!  I'll get up again".  Go to bathroom, come back, repeat.

I hate mysteries like this.  HATE THEM.  Last year was the rashes.  I was relieved when the Dr. said she didn't have a UTI but now I wish more than anything she did so we had an answer and could get her on medication.

Thanks again for the hugs and advice!

i'm not sure, but mason was doing the exact same thing for a while.  i think it was just a phase.  i think he was just afraid he was going to pee in the bed because he stopped doing it after a couple of weeks.  he also did it during the day occasionally, but mostly when he was laying in bed.  he would go like every 3 minutes.

Thanks for this Crystal!  It's good to know it has happened to someone else, wasn't something physical, and resolved itself on its own.

**This is going to be loooooooooong.  Sorry!!***

Same. cry  From like 2:30- 4:30.  BUT this time, she called me in to her room first and said to me "Are there real people who control you and make you dance until you die?".  So she must have had a nightmare.  Couldn't have anything to do with the crazy amount of Zelda her and her Daddy have been playing, right?  Mommy has officially put her foot down again.

I sat at the edge of her bed and she only got up to go pee once while I was sitting there (probably about 45 minutes).  After an hour, I physically could not sit there anymore and knew it would be a worse idea to climb in bed with her again, so I told her I was going to be right next door and there was nothing to worry about.

She got up 5 minutes later to go pee.  I got up and told her no more bathroom because there was nothing left in there and she wasn't going to pee her bed.  Luckily, she fell asleep after that and didn't wake up again until morning.

I think when I'm there, I distract her from her thoughts and she's able to fall asleep.

I'm thinking now it's behavioral but what I'm not sure about is why rather than lay there when she can't fall asleep, she feels like she has to pee.  And I do know that she really does at least think she feels like she has to pee (and isn't faking it) b/c she cries that she just wants to go to sleep but can't stop feeling like she has to go.

Her urine culture came back negative and her pedi said that her urine is 100% normal.  Nothing that would point to any kind of physical issue.  So she suggested a placebo medicine (I don't think this is going to work since we tried Motrin after she suggested it and that didn't work.  If the real thing didn't work I wouldn't think a fake one would).

She also suggested we make a dream catcher.  I love this idea and we are doing it soon.

And thanks to Kelly, I went out and got her a Twilight Ladybug.  Hopefully that will help distract her without my being there.   She LOVES it already and I can't wait to try it out tonight.

If these things don't work and we don't see some improvement by Thursday, her pedi said we will need to see a urologist and get a scan done to make sure there is nothing going on internally that wouldn't show up in the urinalysis.

Aren't you glad you asked now? wink.gif LOL  Thanks for thinking of us *hugs*

oh Di, you poor thing. this sounds like a lot to sort through.
i think nightmares/wanting mommy is VERY common at this age. R is in this stage too - it hasnt translated into excessive peeing, but there's definitely night time anxiety going on.
i just let her sleep with me.
but i dont have another baby on the way.
i'd seriously just say to bring her in your bed, but she's going to be PISSED when that baby gets here and she's used to being in your bed.
so ...
the dream catcher is a GREAT idea, and hopefully the ladybug nightlight will help a bit. it does go off on its own - R sometimes just turns it back on if she's having trouble sleeping.
i have no advice at all.

my sister used to pee a lot when she wanted my mom.  she would do it in school (preschool). it took a lot of talking through.  this is really a tough one.  many hugs. you must be exHAUSTED.

well, it is not totally resolved, but has gotten way better.  his problem is more when he first goes to bed though.  he lays there, gets up to pee, lays there, gets up to pee.  at first i thought it was for attention or because he didn't want to go to sleep, but it really wasn't that.  he either really did have to pee, or he really did *think* he had to pee.  i do think it was the second.  had he been having accidents or anything, i would have taken him to the dr, but i figured since he could sleep the whole night after that, then it must not be a UTI or anything.  it has slowly been getting better.  he still does it some nights, but most nights he isn't any more.

i really think it is just a self-doubt kind of thing.  or, i hope that is what it is.  i hope that is all it is with meghan too and it gets better for her soon.
