Croup pro here, :wave.

Cool mist humidifier is what we are always told and what we use.

Hot steam in the shower

Cold (the freezing air is GREAT) air outside - just bundle them up and take them out. This is by far the best thing that works for us at home. The steam in the bathroom does okay but the cold air does wonders.

The steam air followed by the cold air is wonderful.

We almost always go in with Gavin because he gets it so bad and so quickly and in those cases they can give steroids to help with it but for the most part croup is a wait it out type of thing.

We also take Gavin in though because a lot of times you see ear infections with croup so we like to check it out to try and get it taken care of from the get-go.

The hardest thing (like you said) is that it gets so much worse at night. I mean we have had times where he is completely normal all day and then go to bed and be terribly croupy within an hour. It's crazy. Also, just keeping them calm because when they cry, get scared, get worked up it makes it a lot worse.

It's a good sign if she's not coughing - hope it goes away completely really quickly!

Kelly, I copy and pasted this:

For most children with viral croup, spasmodic croup or infectious laryngitis the following simple measures are all that is necessary to alleviate the symptoms:

Administer mist therapy which involves sitting in a steam-filled bathroom, with the window open and the door closed. Turn on the hot water in the shower or tub and let the room fill up with steam. Sit with the child in the room, with the water still running, for 10 minutes.  Bundle the child up in warm clothes and take them outside in the cool night air for 10-15 minutes.  Use a cool mist vaporizer or humidifier in the child's room  Give the child plenty of clear fluids such as apple juice, water or popsicles to suck on  Treat the fever with acetaminophen (Tylenol or Tempra)  Avoid smoke or smoke-filled rooms.  Keep the child calm and reassured

cool thanks. i didnt want to google it because i am trying to stop researching medical issues - it just causes anxiety for me, even with something minor like croup. i'd rather just ask someone who has experience with it.

so here's what i'm gathering.

vaporizers can be cool mist or warm mist.

and humidifiers are always cool?

My sister's kids used to get it a lot and the one thing she'd tell me is if they're having a coughing attack, either blast them with cold or warm air.

So if it's cold outside go there or if you need to make a steam shower.

How was last night, Kelly?

We only had one experience with croup and it was mild except it came with a fever of 105 (which is how we diagnosed the croup - she freaked the eff out when they put the stethscope on her at the er and heard the croup)

they gave her a steroid shot and that fixed it.

Taking her out in the cold air seemed to fix it when she was having an attack.

Anyway I hope your night was easy and they are on the mend.

ok thank you guys so much.  jen, so sorry that youre such a pro at this!!!  poor gavin!!
last night wasnt bad at all.  i heard maybe 2-3 bad inhales, but she wasnt coughing much. at one point she called for some water - she was like "my froat!! my froat!!!" :( i think she was really dried out even with the vaporizer.

i spoke to my friend again via FB last night, and she said, like the rest of you, that cool mist is better than warm.

R did well with the vaporizer. she's a lot less congested now, and didnt cough a lot at ALL last night.  i'm not sure if i'll try to return the vaporizers or not.  cant decide if they're worth having.  they are not for everyday use at all - i dont want the house stinking like vicks everyday - but maybe when they're REALLY stuffy i'll be happy to have them? cant decide.  opinions??

we slept with one of the humidifiers in our room last night and it was LOVELY.  mike snored a ton less (is that helpful for snoring?), and it just felt really nice in there.  so i think i'm going to buy a third humidifier (for us - esp bc the kids always end up in our bed anyway).

in the winter, the air in your house gets so dry that a humidifier helps with EVERYTHING, including snoring.  Your respiratory system needs moisture to be healthy, that's why the cool mist helps.

That's another reason that info I posted said to give them plenty of fluids, to help with the moisture.

I'm glad y'all had a good night.

I am so glad you had a better night!!!! (and I think I am going to go get new humidifiers for the girls now, lol-Bill might shoot me, but our old ones give me the heebie geebies)

IDK with the vaporizers.  I think if you have room to store them, they come in handy sometimes, kwim?  But if you don't have a place to store them, or don't want to have spent the money on something unneeded, I'd go ahead and return.  We have one, and have never needed two, whereas we have used both humidifiers at the same time.

I am glad to hear last night didn't go to horribly bad.

I always buy cool mist humidifiers. Crane brand is what I like since they are filter free.

actually, you can buy a filter if you want, they say those with real hard water might need it.

but i have not bought one for ours.  owen has to have a cool mist humidifier ran in his room each night it helps with his eczema and allergies. and since i replaced our filtered one it has saved so much since i was paying $6 for a new filter monthly.

That is great!!!  My mom and dad have very hard water, but we don't.  I really should run one in Anna's room all the time, but Bill thinks they are nasty and is against it, and frankly, I can't blame him.  The filters get SO grossed, and they are pricey, and it seems like no matter ho much I scrub, I can't get all of the stains off of the area where the filter sits.  IDK-maybe it is still "clean" but it doesn't leave me with a good feeling, kwim?  I would love to have one that is easy to keep clean and works without a filter.

Do you have one of the animal ones or a different one?

Thanks Sara!!!

yeah, we actually have three now. i waited until they went on sale.

i got a thomas the train one first, got it for like $27...side note but it actually started buzzing the company had me cut the cord and send it in and with in 4 days i had a brand new humidifier.

then we have the elephant and frog both i got on sale for around $25.

the only one that gets run constantly is in owen's room though i have been running one in keegan's room this last week.

weekly i bring them downstairs and empty them out then clean them up with vinegar they work just fine and are super easy to clean up.

Yay!!!  I am going to start keeping an eye out for deals on them.  That sounds PERFECT, and I think both girls would benefit from it (I probably would too, actually).

this is the one i got:
Bionaire BU498-U Ultrasonic Personal Humidifier

it's good, but small. it's for small rooms and dorms.  i guess our BRs qualify as small, but i wouldnt say dorm-size. i feel like i should have gotten bigger. ug. this whole thing is making me f-n insane.  but really i think it's fine.  it runs out in 10 hrs and then you have to refill. i would have gotten bigger, but frankly i just dont have the surface area.
