After months of talking about it, I went to the local Catholic church last weekend. I wanted to go for Christmas too; we were talking about going as a family.
I checked the mass times and they have midnight mass, which I don't think Ethan will be able to handle, and then Christmas Day 8 am and 10 am, which seems on the early side. Seriously, noon would be perfect!
They also have Christmas Vigil on Christmas Eve at 6:30. We are debating going to that but is it the same as a regular Christmas Mass?
I accidentally went to an Easter Vigil mass back in college and it seriously went on for hours and hours. I finally walked out. It was a little too hardcore for me. If Christmas Vigil is the same, I think Ethan's (and EJ's) heads will explode.
I really have not even heard about that. I went to the reading of the Passion at Easter one year and was miserable it was so long.
All our midnight masses are at 10pm, so we're going to try that this year. Most of our churches have a children's mass at 4pm on Christmas Eve, but they're usually a zoo.
We have children's mass at 4 then family mass at 6:30, traditional mass at 10 on Christmas Eve. We usually go to the 6:30 mass and don't go at all on Christmas day. Do they have a website that you can recheck the times? It just seems odd to me.

I know right? I rechecked. There are two vigils today, midnight mass at midnight, 8 am and 10 am tomorrow.
I think I may just go myself tomorrow at 10. Ethan is not going to want to leave after opening his gifts and honestly, I'm not sure if I'm ready to take him. Trying to ease myself back in first.
i think the vigil is long. easter vigil is SO long. holy cow. i wanted to go to church today by myself but - see my post above - mike is working and i dont want to bring the kids. not sure if i can make it tomorrow bc of all the festivities at my house. i'm going to try and figure out a way though.
Here, the Christmas Eve masses are all about the same, save for Midnight Mass. Easter Vigil is always longer-it really is actually a bigger holiday in the church than Christmas. I would think a Christmas Vigil mass might be a bit longer than the others, but nothing too long. Not like Easter.
We went to 4pm-which was a zoo, as always, but they had us out in 45 minutes flat. My parish is good like that. (I do think those things are very parish specific though-we had family who went to other 4pm masses, and some were almost twice as long as ours-our parish is short and to the point)
we didn't want to risk the vigil, plus it was right when we were getting ready to eat. So instead I went to 10 am mass. We didn't finish opening gifts until around 9:30. I took a quick shower, threw on some jeans, and went.
Mass was nice though. I really like this church and both priests that have done the masses I've gone to so we'll see. I don't feel like we need to commit for another year--we'd start Ethan going to CCD classes in the first grade.
