Amazon has a deal going - I could get the D3000 with the 18-55mm lens plus the 55-200 mm lens for $515.86

Should I do it?

I thought I heard this was the replacement for the D40. Is this camera easy enough to use for a total non-professional?

I want/need good pics of my kids and my old camera just isn't doing it. (Plus it got damaged in a snowball fight during our Christmas tree cutting on Sunday)

Help!!?

Totally usable with the amateur photographer.

i have the D60 and i super duper love it!  it is so easy and i hate fiddling with a camera to take a photo.

bert had bought me a d300 for my 40th birthday and it was so professional i was miserable with it, so he kept it for himself and he got me the D60 last summer.

love.it!

I've heard great things about it!! I love my D40 and it seems the D3000 is essentially a D40X. That seems like a fabulous price. I believe it was Ken Rockwell who wrote an excellent guide to the D40. I learned so much from reading that about what my camera can do. You'll shoot great pics on the auto modes and have even more fun in manual once you're ready!

You really can't go wrong. I will say that since I bought my prime lens, (only about $100) I haven't used my 18-55 at all, and rarely even use my 55-200. My SIL bought an 18-200 and it was a bit more at the outset, but it's nice for when you want a close shot and don't want to be across the room. Some people don't mind switching lenses though.

I do not think you can go wrong.  We we have the D60 and love it.

Here is a link to compare them all
http://www.nikonusa.com/Assets/Common-Assets/PDF/DSLR_Compare.pdf

I think the only big difference between the D60 and the D3000 is the D3000 has a improved auto focus.

I am pretty sure it replaces the D60 and not the D40. That is what I am seeing when I read through this.

That is a great price and I would get it.

That price is great with both lenses.

The D3000 replaced both the D40 and the D60s.

It is a steal!  I got this camera back in October and LOVE it!  It is pretty easy to use.  I only got the body + 18-55 lens for $599!!!   That 50-200 lens alone goes for close to $200.

You will need to get a good SD card to go with it - the way it was explained to me is that this camera takes pictures so fast that it needs a card that can receive the pictures as fast as the camera is taking them.  I got the 4gb SDHC Extreme III - it was $50 (I'm sure you can get them cheaper online).

Sara, this is the place I got my camera from, Mally recommended it, and they have one of those cards for 20 bucks:  well, it's not the exact same card, it's not the extreme.

is the 55-200 lens a VR? i've read that is a MUST.

now that i'm without a camera, i'm holding out for the D90. i would LOVE to have videa capabilities on my SLR. this price is so tempting though...

April, did you see the link I posted?  That lens is a VR, but it's not the 55-200.  It's a good price I think.

 yes it is.

i decided against it though because as much as i love the idea i just can't justify the money.
