see, now if i could replace all of my tupperware, sippies, plastic plates, plastic cups, shampoo, and makeup to non-chemical versions free/cheap with coupons, then i might consider the undertaking;)

well there's a burts bees coupon right now - 20% off with BURT20 (might be BURTS20)...and the whole family is covered right there. you can get all lotions, shampoos, etc, and get yourself a tinted lip balm too ($4) - and bam, youre done with all personal stuff.
i got all the glass storage containers on crate&barrel at 15% off with free shipping.  i'm sure there are better deals out there.

foogo is good for the cups, but they're pricey.

makeup, i'm just getting myself a powder, mascara, eyeliner, and lipstick from bare escentuals (provided i like it).  that's all i wear anyway.
biggrin
didnt realize there was lead in candles - but we never light candles anyway.

The candles you just need to make sure there is in lead in the wick. They often put it in to make the wick more straight and not limp.

this is some of what the hazards of some candles are. Again, I am sure we breath this crap in daily with just normal environmental stuff, but they say in a home it is not ventilated.

"
  • Paraffin is a by-product of the petroleum refinery industry, leftover residue of refined petroleum.
  • Soot given off from burning paraffin candles is the same as burning diesel fuel or fumes from a
    diesel engine.
  • Soot particles travel deep into the lungs. Breathing soot is not recommended at all!
  • Tests show that paraffin candles can produce a variety of harmful substances, including benzene &
    toluene, known carcinogens.
  • Testing by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) has found over 20 dangerous compounds in
SIGNIFICANT quantities including acetone, benzene, toluene and lead.
  • The soot from these materials can contain carcinogens, neurotoxins and reproductive toxins.
  • The American Lung Association says, "Burning paraffin candles can emit small amounts of toxins
    into the air."
  • Paraffin is made from leftover residue of the final petroleum refining process. Paraffin candles gives
off the same soot and toxins as the exhaust of a diesel engine, and is considered just as dangerous
as second hand smoke, causing problems, from headaches to lung cancer. Paraffin fumes have
been found to cause tumors in the kidneys and liver of lab animals.
  • According to California's safe drinking water and toxic enforcement act of 1986, there are eleven
toxins in paraffin candle wax--substances found in paint, lacquer and varnish removers.

In 2001 the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) concluded that a burning paraffin candle emits
harmful amounts of toxins in the air that are considered
above the excess cancer risk."

Another huge one is sunscreen.

I was just thinking of that this morning.  With the amount of sunscreen a lather the kids in every single day in the summer, I know the chemicals must be insane.

on the other hand, I have such fair skin and had such bad blister burns as a kid (*cough, thanks mom) that I am a walking poster child for future skin cancer risk.  I don't want my kiddos to worry about it.  Ugh.  Sucks.

silly question as this is pretty much the only plastic thing in our kitchen...

how do you keep leftovers?

i hate to use those foil containers with paper lids all the time because the are expensive and as well create garbage.

i have a few glass containers i use to put food in, but they have a plastic lid...

yikes on the candles. glad i'm not a big candle person or else i'd be obsessing for the next three days - lmao.
muffy, my glass storage containers also have plastic lids.  they are safer plastic, and i am never microwaving or putting them through the dishwasher.  this is about as well as i can do, i think. i considered using all tinfoil on top, but i agree with you, it's a lot of trash.

as for sunscreen, i know. SCARY.  i'm going to check in to california baby for sunscreen for next year.  i ordered burt's bees moisturizer with SPF 15 for myself (after my mole issues i want a moisturizer + sunscreen for daily use).

also do you guys know the line "arbonne?"  it's BEAUTIFUl and all natural - a bit pricey which is why i'm hesitating - but my cousin is a saleswoman for the lne, and i think i'm really going to just go through her and purchase minimal makeup (one lipstick, one eye shadow, one mascara, one pressed powder).  their wrinkle cream is to die for, and i think i might treat myself to that in the spring.

I use arbonne diaper cream and sun lotion on Mia. There is no petroleum oil in their sunscreen or mineral oil. I love their face cream and plan to get that from them. I want that whole line of face cream, but it is expensive. I think I may invest though because it last a long time.

raw chicken i do not freeze, buy fresh.  i dont freeze any raw meats for that matter.

however it a make a prepared meal that is to be frozen i do tend to put them in those tinfoil containers with paper lids - they stack well and can put them directly in the oven.  the volume is lower though than everyday leftover use.

i do like to cook a large quantity meal and serve it twice during the week.  i guess i could put leftovers in glass baking dishes or ceramic bowls and put tinfoil over...  ugh, tupperware is just so handy!

do you use all bio/organic cleaning products?  bertrand converted us in the summer and i was always concerned they did not work as well - but they do.  and we also use bio/organic kitchen trash bags.

crappy thing is this healthy/organic/bio stuff is more expensive!

(i was shocked - about 2 weeks ago i went to the organic butcher and bought 8 slices of cooked ham, 3 half chicken breasts and 1.2 pounds of ground beef - it was EUR45 which is like $60!!!)

I am dying here. I cannot do it all. Those are pretty cool,  but I know Allie would toss them if I put them in her lunch or for what they cost I would be ticked to lose them.

mmm, yeah i definitely cant buy fresh all the time.  when i buy chicken, i unwrap it and put half raw in the freezer for later use, or else i waste a ton.  i am reading now that you can use butcher paper....might look more into that.

cleaning products, i use vinegar and water mainly.  i have to say though, i still do use plenty of cleaning products that have chemicals in them.  that will be a future overhaul for sure.  i think vinegar and water has to the cheapest way - but the house does smell after that. it's better int eh summer when you can actually air the place out.  i am going to look into new cleaning products for sure.  next supermarket trip.

good quality butcher paper and masking tape?  i would imagine it would have to be "sealed" or else it would get freezer burn.... and that would suck.

also depends on how long you intend to freeze the stuff for...

The california baby sunscreen is great.

it didn't bother josie's super sensitive skin at all and it works so well. Here's an example of how well:

lmao - that just from the extra sunscreen that got on Josie's hands

I sold Arbonne a couple of years ago.  I now use all Bare Escentuals stuff (make-up, cleanser, moisturizer, rare minerals, etc.) and won't ever go back.  (I do still love the RE9 eye cream though.)  The RE9 line was way too moisture rich (greasy-ish) and thick for my liking.  My skin is not at all dry though.

I use BE make-up but never have used the moisturizer and that. You really like it?

my random thoughts on this...

1. I loved Arbonne when I used it a while back (think pre-marriage & small kids)

2. I still have 2 small boys that get pissed off and throw/drop dishes (yes, they get a time out for it). What can I use for them?

3. How can I go more organic/less chemical but not end up broke as a joke? I'm trying so hard to make healthier choices like giving the kids less processed foods, but I'm choking over prices with a 6 person family.

4. I get practically panicked when I think about those chemicals, etc... around my kids so I end up freezing and putting it out of my head.
