so i'm thinking of making some playdoh ornaments (cookie cutters and i'll make my own playdoh) - do you guys know what kinds of paints work on playdoh? and what kind of glaze to use? i'm also thinking about felting some ornaments for the tree so i dont have to worry about breakable stuff...i'll sew some snowmen or gingerbread men, santas, whatever. and i'm itching to make throw pillows for their beds as a gift (i want to do a homemade gift every year if poss) - i was thinking of either doing like a big doll-face, or a cat shaped pillow (i love the patchwork owls that were in PBK recently, but i think they'd prefer cats...) no CLUE how to sew, but i guess i'll figure it out!! i'm going to try anyway. could be a huge disaster but whatev
i also want to think of a way to make just little dolls of some sort to fill their stockings with (not *fill* i guess...but i dont want to spend on stocking stuffers so i think i'll get creative).
any craft ideas circulating for you guys? i am so ahead with shopping and preparations that i actually have a lot of free time :cool
seeing posts like this make me think I could be a sahm. I would love to do stuff like this but I don't have time. I thought I was all that because Ethan and I decorated and cut out snowflakes today.
I want to learn to knit. That's the extent of my crafting. and I've been saying that for 3 years.

i know. it's weird being a sahm right now. i mean, cara is only just 2, so i'm with her alllll the time, but literally she ONLY wants to play with rachel. they go upstairs and play all day and i'm down here like - guys??? hello????? (which is nice, bc i have a lot of free time lately, but i also feel sort of unproductive). i'm trying to enjoy these years as much as possible bc i know i'll be back to work fulltime (or close to it) before i know it.
wish you still lived here - i could teach you how to knit in an hour :)
Hannah and I make these every year... Usually she just helps me staple the pieces together, but this year I'll let her cut the lines, and we'll hang them up in the toyroom downstairs. It's easy, and fun, and I'm not out a ton of money when I get bored, lol.
And add me to the list of who wants to learn to knit. I've given up any hope of learning to sew.
i've been MIA but I can't pass up a crafting thread
i'm still a crafting hobo, currently into sewing. i'm LOOOOOVING sewing, i turned out 6 pairs of pajama pants over the thanksgiving holiday.
there are some really cute patterns on etsy for the things you're talking about, esp pillows. even if you don't buy the pattern, looking at the pics can give you some good ideas.
also, i did an advent calendar last year that I loooove. this year i'm thinking of doing some felt banners too, like the ones from LY on land of nod. they're still there this year and i still love them. that'll be my post final exam craft reward. :D
okay, this is what i remember doing in girl scouts: salt dough ornaments
Salt Dough Ornaments
You will need:
• ½ cup salt • 1 cup flour • ½ cup water • Rolling pin • Cookie sheet • Toothpick • Various cookie cutters • Acrylic paints: various colors and you can even use wood stains for a natural effect • Glitter glue or glitter paint • ribbon
How to make it:
Preheat the oven to 250 degrees F. Mix together, salt, flour, and water until dough is formed. Knead the dough on a floured surface until the mixture is elastic and smooth. If dough is too sticky, sprinkle with flour, continue to do so until stickiness is gone. Do not add too much flour, this will dry out the dough and will cause it to crack before you get a chance to bake it. Roll out the dough to about ¼” thick with a rolling pin that has been dusted with flour. Use cookie cutters to cut out as many shapes as you want. Use a toothpick to make a hole toward the top of the shape. Poke the toothpick into the shape, then holding toothpick straight up and down, make a circular motion as if you were stirring something. Keep circling until the hole is the size you want. Place all shapes onto an ungreased cookie sheet and place into the preheated oven. Bake for 2 hours. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely.
Look at this pic, has a recipe in the caption http://www.flickr.com/photos/jessamyn/2122428401/

i've given up mostly on the sewing thing too. it just seems completely unrealistic for me to ever get *really* good.

ohhhhhhhhhh my god that blog is fantastic. i cant wait till i have time to really read. thanks for the playdoh recipe. i've found similar recipes but didnt know what to glaze them with - glitter paint is a good idea. i feel a trip to michaels in my immediate future (ie, 9am). i have an advent house that i totally forgot to fill. ug. i am sure cara would just open the whole thing anyway. i guess i could fill each little door the night before though. ug there's SO much i want to do.....

I can kind of sew but not well enough to bust out anything great. Well, okay. That's a lie. I can sew but for some odd reason I must have taken a blow to the head that knocked out the sewing machine undertanding in my head b/c I can't seem to make the damn thing run right. That being said-
Have you thought about knitting them some amigurumi dolls? Amigurumi is super easy. I haven't had any time to do it but all of the patterns I'm finding are easy.

LMK how easy they really are. I crochet and have been so afraid to do it. There are a bunch of little girls in our circle that I would love to make these for but am afraid to try! I wanted to make them to match the girls- like this one girl E in our church. She's my baby buddy- I think its b/c I let her play with my phone- But I think she'd love a doll like that but I'm too afraid to attempt it!
