Owen will also be held back. You saying that about Jack on facebook to me was one thing among many that helped seal our decision on it.
Owen is more than ready academically. But the trend around here is to hold your child back. So knowing that Owen will be a brand new five year old in there where some kids are over a year older then him just really turns me off to the whole idea. That and he is small for his age, even though he is a little spit fire. ;)
I have went back and forth until I was blue in the face and have consulted so many teachers and friends.
In the end you will never find one person who says they regret the decision to hold their child back so that is what we are going with.
This is going to sound so silly but it's true.
I volunteer for playground duty and I'll use Jack's class (4th grade) as an example.
There are a few kids who were held back plus the fact that they are taller and bigger to begin with.
Their nice kids but they also rule the lunchtime sports.
They organize the playground sports and the 4th grade boys who are smaller usually shoot hoops or something by themselves or with a friend.
It's just sad to see kids left out because they're small and for guys, sports are important and a total bonding time.
It's not that they're purposely told that they can't play, it just kind of works out that way, the bigger stronger kids play football as a group and the other boys do other stuff.
That's another reason why I would love Jack to be a grade back. He's already small and I think it could just give him that extra boost.
He's very self confident thankfully but that could easily not be the case.

Does that make sense?
It does make sense and just helps me be at ease with our decision even more.
