Natural mood lifters/antidepressant?

This is one of the sucky things about not having medical insurance...I KNOW i need to see a dr before I get any worse, but...

anyway, does anyone know of any natural mood lifters/antidepressants? I took something years ago (St john's wort?) but after like 3 months i just didn't feel any different, and went to a dr and got paxil which didnt hekp much so she gave me something else to take with it but idr what it was.

After daniel was born before the medicaid ran out on me, i saw my ob for severe ppd and he gave me Lexapro, he gave me 3 months worth of samples and it really did help, but that was 4 years ago and I couldn't then, nor can I now afford it...of course now I'd have to add the $150 office visit cost.

Anyway, without going into specifics about how I'm feeling emotionally/mentally, the other parts of me---the quirks--are starting to get worse.

i've know i should be able to just pull myself by my bootstraps and stop feeling like this because there just isnt time for it...but my god i'm so damn tired....a lot of people don;t know how i'm feeling at all bc i'm the STRONG one, the SMART one, everyone's friend, the NORMAL one.

any thoughts about something that might could help?

I've been taking B12. It seems to help with my crazy irritation and memory loss.

Also, my doc prescribed citalopram and said it is very similar to lexapro but it is a generic. It's one of the $4/month or $9/3 month prescriptions at Walmart. Just FYI.

I've heard (from Crystal I think) that 5-htp can help with depression also.

St. John's Wort and Gingko Biloba are the two I know of. St. John's Wort is the best, from what i've heard. I took it as a teenager and it seemed to help a little. But then, I had tons of issues so I was on a pretty strong dose of Prozac for a few months before I could reduce my dose to the milder herbal forms.

Yes, that was me.  Try it!  But, you should only take it for about 6 weeks, then go off for a couple of weeks, then try again.  I took them for a while and stopped taking them cold turkey with no ill effects when things got better in my life.  I have read that you have to take at least 200mg/day to be effective, but I was only taking 50mg before bed and I felt a huge difference.  I actually took them to help me sleep, but they made me feel so much happier, so I kept taking them for a while.  Take before bed at first.  I think it is supposed to be most effective if you break out the dose throughout the day though.

What are you doing these days for exercise?

It's helped a TON for me, to where I *personally* wouldn't even think of taking a medication at this point. (I traded my ADHD meds to continue running, when the two hit a point where they were mutually exclusive.)

The crappy part, of course, is that it takes a while for the benefits to start kicking in. But it's made such an amazing difference for me.

In terms of supplements, I've been taking fish oil (krill) and CLA, and it does wonders for helping with PMS-related symptoms. If you're noticing anything cyclical going on (although I don't know what life is like for you post-hysterectomy, so forgive me if that's dumb)... it might be worth a shot.

HTH!

Chele- you can get the $4 generics and those are still $4 regardless of whether you have insurance or not. Just go by whatever pharmacy you use and ask for their $4 generic list and take it to your doc. :)

I am also going to suggest exercise. I swear it keeps me sane.
