ok, so my jewel is running a spend $30 get $15 cat promotion starting thursday. i went through the ad and separated out the things i would buy into $30 groups. right now i have 4 groups of items each costing $30 according to their sale prices.

can you walk me through this?

so i can order coupons online from....where?

and then what's the best way to roll these cats so i can spend the least amount of money.

okay, first of all. your ad says buy $30 at sale prices get $15, but guess what! the $30 is almost always met from shelf prices, not sale prices!! and coupons don't count against your total. hmmm, maybe doing a little example will help you--does your store double coupons?? if not, then disregard my doubling in my math below...

so, here is a scenario i am planning on for this deal:

breyers is $5.29 shelf price and 2.99 sale price. buying $30 (at shelf price, don't forget) gets me $15. i also have a bunch of .75/1 breyers coupons to use and my store doubles, so those are worth 1.50. are you following me?? :)

here is my math:

6 breyersX5.29=31.74 (so i have met that $30 mark)
6 breyers at sale price of 2.99= 17.94
now, don't forget i have 6 .75/1 q's to use doubled to 1.50 so...
6 q's X 1.50 each= 9.00

6 breyers 17.94- 9.00 in q's= 8.94 spent of MY money and get back 15.00

so, i just made $$ by buying those.

now, if i go back and do the EXACT same transaction i am now "rolling"--

my total will once again be 8.94, but instead of cash, i pay with cats and a new $15 worth of cats will print out.

i will group all of my deals into similar amount and pay with the cats all week long. now, my freezer is stocked with icecream (enough to last me until the next cat deal)

any questions??

i order from the couponsnthingsbydede site.

ok, my store doesn't double but that's besides the point.

i asked at afullcup also but how do i know if the cat will print on shelf prices or on sale prices? last time i tried using shelf prices it didn't print bleh

and do you do the transactions together? like could i group my stuff in separate orders and do it all at once or is that a grocery no-no? giggle.gif

here's my other question... what do i do in between cat sales? as in, how often do they have these kinds of sales?

thank you so much for this, seriously.

oh, and i ordered my coupons from that site yesterday afternoon and i got an email last night saying they shipped already!?!?? holy crap!

sara, i get my coupons from that site too and they are SUPER fast.  i usually order them on sunday, they ship monday first thing and i get them thursday.  with you being more in the middle of the country, i bet you get yours in 2 days.

idk if all the stores are doing it, but one thing that i've been big time scoring on are the steamfresh or similar brand steam in bag micro veggies.  i have a TON of 50c/1 coupons and my store has been having them on sale almost every week for 99c.  that means that when they double the coupon, i get free vegetables.  my store limits 4 free items per transaction, but i try to hit the store a few times per week to stock up on veggies.

so stock up on the good sales for things i can freeze/store. got it.

i so wish our store doubled. not one store around here doubles coupons. i think that's another reason to move away from here when jake is done with high school wink

I can't remember a time when the Cat deals did not work on shelf price, Sara. I will say this though--once in awhile something in the ad (like a particular flavor soup or something) won't get coded for the deal and thus won't produce a Cat. I would venture to guess you bought something that was the culprit rather than it didn't work on shelf prices. The only way you can really find out if something isn't working is to check your store's forum the day of the sale and see what other people have bought and had work.

Shaws seems to have Cat deals every 3 weeks or so --in the in between time, I only need to get produce, meat, and veggies because I stockpile during the deals--like this week I will buy 10 Breyers, 36 papertowels, 30 boxes of kleenex, 30 tubs of frosting (what can i say, i like cake:) ), 12 boxes of broth, 10 jars of spaghetti sauce, etc. That way I know I won't run out before another deal comes around. The deals are always different, so after a few months you should have a good variety of things in your pantry.

Also, when you are trying to figure out what coupons to order, think seasonally. If it is early November you can count on things like baking chips, ready made pie crusts, soup, stuffing mix, boxed potatoes, parchment paper, etc. going on sale for holiday cooking. If it is June it is a safe bet to order q's for marinades, salad dressing, paper plates, ketchup, mayo, mustard b/c bbq season is around the corner. At the end of August you can plan on ordering q's for back to school stuff like uncrustables, etc...because they WILL go on sale. Near Halloween & Valentine's Day--candy q's are a sure bet. Make sense???

Has anyone read this book?

just to share another awesome deal...

we LOVE to buy filet mignons from acme when they're on sale for $4.99 a pound (the cheapest they ever get). we stock up the freezer when we see it.

well, this week acme is having that sale, PLUS they're having a spend $30, get a $15 off your next purchase coupon. so for the next 4 days (the length of the sale), i'll be stopping by there several time to get $30 worth of filet mignon (6 pounds) for $15. that works out to only $2.50 per pound!!!!

I just read about this blog today:

The blogger did a "food stamps challenge", where she took a budget of however much one would get in food stamps for her size family, and shopped and meal-planned accordingly.  She tends to lean toward organic foods, grass-fed meats, local produce, etc., so the recipes aren't just rice and beans and pasta.  I haven't perused it much yet but it looks interesting!

Sara - thanks so much for posting this, you've inspired me to get back on the wagon of meal planning.

Corey - thanks so much for being awesome. I am really motivated to get into couponing. In fact, I talked to my husband and we are going to put shelves in our laundry room (it's tiny) and move all the stuff from the linen closet into there so we have an entire closet for stocking up on food. It will help so much and he thinks it's a great idea. I honestly never would have thought about it without your post about the fourth bedroom and it making me think of ways we could do it in our house. TYSM!
