So I had thisyears first schedule conference with Daniel's Pre-K teacher...I'm either getting very old, or she's just super young :dunno:
anyway, she said considering he had never been in daycare or other preschool setting, he's doing really well and even ahead of some the kids in what he knows. What he is a little behin in though is his fine motor skills especially in regards to coloring and printing which can be helped by letting him color more and having him practice printing more. She said she is surprised how well he uses scissors...which is a surprise bc i NEVER let him use any, but the examples she showed me, he had cut perfectly on the lines.
back to his fine motor with coloring and printing---she and i both notice that he isnt right or left handed. he switches back and forth throughout the task so he's not really getting proficient on either side, although he seems to do equal poor quality work with either hand LOL. She didn't recommend MAKING him use one hand or the other, so I'm not going to worry about it I guess. I bought him another coloring book and crayons this morning...even though honestly he doesnt really like to color much, he'd rather be outside with his cars and skateboard.
He's socializing really well and making friends. Still pretty shy and quiet though so she (like I) have to get down to his level and make him look at her face and speak loudly and clearly...this has been a constant thing with him forever, so there's no surprise to me there.

sounds like a good conference. R is still switching too, though now she's starting to commit to left hand for writing/coloring, and right hand for eating. she's not all that great with fine motor - her teachers have siad she's right up to speed with everyone else, but like daniel, she doesnt like to color or practice other fine motor tasks. she does love to write, so that's good, but she doesnt like beading or coloring or cutting. i think she gets frustrated easily. i talked to her pedi about the ambidextrous thing, and he said it's perfectly possible that she's working up both hands, and that he's ambi himself and followed a similar pattern to rachel (writes lefty, eats righty, plays sports lefty, but is right-footed, etc). he said if they havent committed to a hand yet, they usually do in K or 1st grade. i do think it slows R up a bit, or at least causes some frustration.
i'm glad it is going so well!! mason still hasn't chosen a hand either, and is having the same problem with not being very good with either one, lmao. it makes sense though, because they are learning to write with both of them. i hope he picks one soon. the teacher said to just be patient and not show a preference to either.
as an ambi myself, don't make him choose. My K teacher did and I hated it, it really frustrated me. I'm willing to bet I might be able to write with both hands had she not. I write left, bat/throw right, preferred left side in basketball, eat with both :)
Sounds like a great conference. Coloring.(insert rolling eye emotion here) Stephen uses both hands but ended up preferring left. All during kindergarten I heard about how bad his coloring was and he needed to work on it. He hated coloring and I didn't make him. There are other ways to work on fine motor skills.
