For Rebecca's school and their families
Permalink

I just got a call from Rebecca's school.  Her English teacher died yesterday.  I'm not sure what happened.  He was young so I'm thinking it was an accident of some sort, although I didn't think it was appropriate for me to ask so I'm not positive.  I know he had students in his classes that will miss him, as will the others who worked with him, and, of course, his family.

I'm also in need of a little advice.  I haven't told Rebecca yet.  She only met him a few times and didn't know him very well at all.  I'm not certain whether it will be a big deal for her or not.  I'm not sure what to do about telling her.  The school will post the announcement next week so she'll know then.  I'm not sure I should tell her before then or not since she didn't really know him.  Any advice?

I definitely think it would be much better for you to tell her in person than for her to find out from a posting at school JIC she is upset by it. How sad. How young was he? I'm sure you will get more information as a little bit of time passes.

that's really sad :(
an english teacher (not mine) died when i was in HS too, of melanoma.
the students all knew what happened within the day, so i'm sure rebecca will be hearing about it in no time.
i'd have a talk with her so that you can be the first one to break the news, even if she didnt know him well.  it might end up being a really important convo ya know?

I think he was in his late 20's or early 30's.  At least that's about the age he looked to me.

How sad.  I will pray for all involved, especially this mans family.

That's so terrible Alaina cry

I do think you should just sit her down and tell her.  She's old enough to understand death, and it would be better if she heard it from you first.

I agree with what the others have said.  I also think that by you telling her, she will have an opportunity to ask you questions and the door will all ready be open if she feels the need to talk later.  I will send up some prayers.

I told her and she wasn't upset by it at all. The school hasn't posted it online yet, but Rebecca did notice she has a new English teacher today.

Oh, and I was wrong. The teacher was in his late 30's. He had two young children, ages 5 and 7.
