Swine Flu Advice

Just thought I'd pass this along since some of our kids WILL get swine flu this season.

When Ryan had the flu the other week, the doc was saying that the bad thing about swine flu is the secondary chest infection/pneumonia that they can get that can turn deadly, which I think we all know by now.

She had Ryan taking 24 hour allergy medicine once a day, like claritin or zertec along with liquid sudifed every 4 to 6 hours.

All to keep him dried up so that it wouldn't start draining into his lungs.

He did have a cough and this did seem to help.

So I just wanted to share so that you know not to be scared and that there are things you can do to help once your kids get sick.

That and get them on tamaflu at the first sign of flu.

Thanks Kristi! Good to know. The hard thing about the Tamiflu is that a lot of docs aren't giving it out unless they shows signs of a secondary infection or if they have underlying health problems. Ugh, this is so hard.

I am actually going in this afternoon because I am still so sick and my chest feels so tight.

jake is on a tsp of Claritan every 24 hours right now because of cough, runny nose, sneezing, etc.

maybe I'll keep him on it all winter!

Thanks, Krisit - I think we are going this route.

 That's ridiculous!

The whole point of it is to stop the symptoms at the point they're at so you don't get secondary infections.

I think it would be worth the money to go to a Walgreens type clinic and get it there if your doc won't give it to you.

JenM works at a hospital and she said they're not even testing patients for the swine flu anymore, they're just giving tamaflu if they have any signs of flu since H1N1 is the one that's going around right now.

I will ditto this. My kids were not on the cough meds. But I kept them with motrin/tylenol the first day or two.

I really think Tamiflu is what helped a ton.

They even gave it to Owen and he did not even have it so I am shocked that some doctors are not giving it out at all.

And watch your kid! You know them best. If they seem out of it or coughing and having trouble TAKE THEM IN!

Interesting that they aren't even testing since it is just a nose swab. See I went into the doc today with flu symptoms and I don't have the flu. So, I would think they would at least do the quick check before handing out tamiflu. That drug works wonders but it seems like it they pass it out so easily it's going to lose it's effectiveness. I dunno.

My friend's 2 year old was diagnosed with the flu yesterday.  She lives in a pretty big town, and went to 4 different pharmacies for Tamiflu.  Everyone was out.  She finally found some at Wal-Mart, which they had to compound it for her.

Maybe "they" whoever they are, lol, need to be producing more Tamiflu...

This test just tests for flu, not H1N1.  They have to send that one off for confirmation.  The nose swab only confirms if it's Type A, which not all Type A is H1N1.

I have another friend who's daughter has the flu..well that's what they're treating it as because he said the doctor didn't actually test her but that because she had the symptoms, he was treating it as such.

Right, I knew that about not confirming that it was H1N1. I thought Kristi meant they weren't even testing if it was the flu but I'm guessing she meant checking if it was specifically H1N1.

Why aren't they checking to see if it IS the flu? I mean, it's a nose swab to see if it's even a flu virus. Why just base it off symptoms?

Ditto ditto ditto ditto

Meghan had the flu last week.  I took her in really early because I could just tell she was off, and after a day on the Tamiflu, she was so much better.

I didn't do the claritan or Zyrtec, and 2 days later, the fever was back and she had a secondary chest infection (also caught early so she's fine).

Thanks for posting this Kristi!
