the h1n1 virus will hit its peak THIS WEEK - Oct 24. they are saying that in this week alone, 8% of the population will be infected, with it tapering off from there.
considering that the h1n1 vaccine takes one month to be effective after it is administered, they are now saying it is basically too late.

ya know i have to say, i figured this would happen. the damn thing isnt even available, and then it's not effective...i mean that brings us all at least till december/january.
interesting that this is the peak week...i guess it's a good week to obsessively wash hands and skip the freebee library storytimes...otherwise i dont see much we can do...
i guess i don't feel so silly about keeping my younger ones out of school and out of stores, etc.... the end of last week and all of this week.
i basically did it because mikey has no white cell count right now and i didn't want to take any chances with the new flu (my kids all got the seasonal flu shot)
having said that, i might still get my kids the h1n1 vaccine when it's available because it will still be around and i can't really take the chance with mikey.

that's why I don't trust the thing anyway..dang government
I just keep praying for God to protect my entire family, that's all I know to do

blah - i don't like either choice.
you absolutely should NOT feel silly about this. I'd have done it ANY time Mikey is like this if it were me.
Honestly, at this point I believe nothing. For every statement or study you can find another to counter it. I find it interesting how they think it will peak this week? Really? I mean it has not died out since it started. Tomorrow there will be another breaking news story saying something else.
This whole media blitz and honestly the medical professionals should be held to some standard too. You have so many different opinions on it. I have talked to many that I know in the medical world here in MI and other states. They are all giving their opinion and based on what? No facts and a lot of emotions.
Then they hault the reg flu vaccine to mass produce this H1N1 and leave many out there without the flu vaccine in order to rush this? It is all madness.
Well, IMO it's not fact. It's just a model and I remember when this initially came out reading an article that had a model showing it wouldn't even reach Idaho! So, how can we really predict what a new virus is going to do? I just don't get it.

EXACTLY! So how can they produce a vaccine that's 1) effective, and 2) safe for a NEW virus?
Daniel's school starts vaccinating today---I signed the opt out form for him. WOuldn't have done him any good anyway bc starting Sunday, what I thought was him just being tired from playig outside all day Saturday (ihni how i'm going to the stains out of his pants LOL), was relally the first day of flu symptoms--he hit a 102.6 fever last night. I called the Pedi after hours clinic and the nurse said his symptoms sound like flu and to treat symptoms and push the fluids.
So, the whole house has been exposed. Now we'll just wait and see who all gets sick.
megan, do you feel like the media here is total opposite of the U.S.? maybe it is because there aren't as many cases, i'm not sure. people just don't seem to be nearly as freaked out about it. every time i see a story on it, they always make it seem like it is not a big deal. then, when i look at the news channels from the U.S. it is total chaos.

oh yeah - over here european coverage is light. i consider it a few things:
1. the americas are a lot harder hit than most of europe (although UK is hit as bad as the US)
2. the european media is a LOT less sensationalised in europe than in the states (not including the UK - the brits are just as bad as the americans)
3. (this is my personal theory...) the drug companies "own" the media to some degree. with ALL the advertising revenue the drug companies spend to over hawk their drugs, i feel strongly that somehow they have a hand in all the reports... amazing. if i am frank - the drug companies abuse of america(ns) disgusts me. too much advertising, too much overprescribing, TOO EXPENSIVE!!!! they play a BIG part in why americas health care system is so completely and utterly effed up atm.
i admit - i watch a lot of American news - that's why i am as sick of it as any other american at this point.... just stop the insanity!!!

mmm. you and my husband would have a LOT in common re: #3. he is outraged by this whole topic.

Megan - I feel the same way about he drug companies. I mean I see if first had at the Dr. office. They push what their reps give them deals on and what free samples. Not what is the latest or best. It is a messed up system for sure. I wish the drug companies had more liability. There is too much money exchanging hands in politics and pharmaceutical
I have been wavering about this vax from the start.
Well, my pedi's office has an email list, and said they would be emailing when they got the H1N1 vax to set up clinics for it each month. They sent the email yesterday-before I even GOT the first one telling everyone about the 8 clinics each with 100 openings, they sent another email saying all of them were full.
So I guess at least for this month, it is out of my hands.
We are trying to be uber cautious about hand washing and such, but I feel like there is only so much you can do. I am just praying we all stay healthy!
