well....I have to have ALOT of work on my teeth done and a couple weeks ago, they started a root canal and I had laughing gas (nitrous oxide) to help me relax since I have EXTREME anxiety (not just a little bit, but way out there - even with the gas, I was not relaxed and had to have them stop as soon as they started and just started freaking out). Last night, I was supposed to get some more work done, so he prescirbed me two valium tablets - they did absolutely NOTHING. (I haven't taken valium before but I thought they would relax me or something).
Does anyone have any advice? have you had experience with sedation denistry? I wish they could just put me to sleep!
I'm sorry that you have so much anxiety Liz - my oldest son has tons of anxiety with needles, etc. so I kinda know what you're going through watching him get so upset and worked up.
the only experience I've had with sedation dentistry is when Jake had to have sealants put on his molars when he was 2.5 years old.
I would seriously look into it Liz since this causes you so much anxiety. I know that with Little John I have tried and tried talking to him and trying to calm him and ease him but nothing works. He is just scared out of his mind!! He has needed teeth extracted 3 different times for his ortho work.
We did finally have luck with a female dentist who worked some voo doo magic and must have just made him feel super comfortable. He was so good for her. Went back to the same practice a year later and she was gone. He would not do anything the dentist ask. They asked me to come back and talk to him while he was in the chair (thinking I could convince him to let them in his mouth) but there was no going forward. Last year I tried another dentist who assured me he could get the job done (I did not believe him for a second because I know John). We went to his office on a Saturday and he did the same voo doo magic - John was super for him. I think for John it must be a level of trust and comfort. I'm guessing that is not the case with you - you probably have this anxiety regardless of the dentist.

I would definitely pursue the sedation dentistry route. You are NOT the only one to ever be so anxious that you can't let them do what they need to, even with normal relaxation assists, so please don't feel bad or anything about that! Some people just have more trouble than others.
I have a very good friend who had to have a lot of dental work done this summer (including an extraction and one or two root canals; I can't remember all of it now) and he had the sedation dentistry done because nothing else was helping -- think the kind of person who jumps out of the chair for a simple cleaning, k?
He said the sedation was the best move he could've made and was very happy that he was able to have the work done without putting himself through hell. And I know that in the future, if he has to have more work done, he'll go that route again.

Thanks mel! It is good to know he had some success with it. I think I am going to ask my dentist about it.

I am glad you finally found someone that John is comfortable with, but yes for me, I have anxiety regardless of the dentist.
