I'm heavily leaning toward another year of Preschool for Nolan.  I was a summer birthday too and know I should have been held back a year as well, so I have no problems with holding him back.

His ped told me, and I totally agree, that it's really if they are emotionally ready for Kindergarten, not academically ready.  She also said, that boys are typically ones held back because they aren't mature enough yet and really have trouble following the rules that come in to play more starting in K.

He really has trouble at preschool right now sitting at the table and doing his work when he's supposed to.  We are going to wait toward the end of this school year and make our decision then.

I feel kind of bad because the elementary school he will be going to is in our neighborhood and we pass by it every day.  I had told him once that he would be going to school there when he turned 5 and of course he will not let me forget it.  He talks about it constantly.  I'm trying to plant the seed now that he may not be going there until 6, but so far he's standing firm.

We are going to decide based on the progress E makes.  Since we have had testing done, it has become obvious that intellectually she is fine, but her motor skills are lagging.  This has led to anxiety and some other emotional/social issues.  At this point we will see how fast the therapy helps.  If by the next school year she is not ready, then we will wait another year.

On a side note to this emotional readiness, I know I shouldn't be, but I am shocked at how soon kids are starting with the crud about who can be friends and who can play with who, etcdisbelief

I completely agree with this!  I'm shocked too.  Nolan has several kids from India in his class.  When I was quizzing him about his friends, who he plays with, what he plays, etc., he told me he couldn't play with so-and-so because they had a brown face and not a yellow one like him.

screeeeeeechhhing halt!  For the life of me I cannot figure out where he came up with that.  His teachers say they haven't heard any kind of talk like that there and he definitely hasn't gotten it from home or tv.  We are wondering if it's just an awareness that he's having and for some reason he doesn't like certain people and is just labeling them.  We are really trying to correct him on this, but trying not to make too much of an issue because we don't know what he's repeating to the other kids at school or where he got it from.

It makes me so sad that this has already started.
